THE CURRENCY QUESTION NOT AN
ISSUE IN THE NEXT CAMPAIGN.
Mr. Bryan is quoted as saving
in a recent speech made in Iowa,
that “the currency question can¬
not he made the most conspicuous
in the, next presidential cam¬
paign. ” Mr. Bryan has had suf¬
ficient experience to be in a posi¬
tion to know whether the currency
question is it safe issue upon which
to place the issues: of the campaign
or not. Mr, Bryan would doubt¬
less have been elected in the last
campaign but for the free silver
craze which he so zealously advo¬
cated. The test therefore, on this
issue, was then and there fully
made, and proven conclusively,
that the currency question, espe¬
cially that of free silver, is not a
safe plank upon which place
democratic success in the coming
campaign.
From the present outlook it is
highly probable that Mr. Bryan
will Be the democratic nominee in
the next presidential campaign,
and with the currency question
laid to rest his chances for ejec¬
tion will be good.
SAVE YOUR TIMBER.
Recent estimates go to show that
the exports of lumber this year
will aggregate a vnluatian of $50,-
tXXlJXXl. This is a clear indication
of how rapidly the forests of the
country are being turned into dol¬
lars. Into whose pockets does the
bulk of this money go? Not the
land owner, for he sells his timber
by the lot at a very low figure.
Not to the laborer, for he works
for low wages and is usually made
to pay the highest prices at tin-
mill commissary for what he eats
and wears. But it all goes into
t he pockets of the mill syndicate
who, when all the timber is des¬
troyed, will return to their former
which is usually north of
t his latitude, to enjoy the money
t hey have thus accumulated out of
the poor farmers of the South.
The far-sighted owner of timber
lands will thus act wisely and hus¬
band his resources and provide for
a continuing revenue for himself,
and for his children after him,
rather than practically sacrifice
everything to supply immediate
wants which might lie otherwise
provided for.
Tlte farmer who plants cotton is
usually haunted by the low price
of cotton prevailing about the time
it; is ready for market and their
debts are pushing them. No kind
or amount of juggling with figures
will’show any profit-to tire grower.
They tire thus forced by, circum¬
stances to part with s.hcir crop at
a very small figure, if any at all,
the cost of production. Af¬
ter tlte great majority of the crops
thus been forced upon t he tnar-
j.,. t ilI1(1 s .,f ( .] v hmde.l in the hands
of the speculator, the price take *8
tt sudden tendency upward, and
thus this little stdteme is being
played yearly leaving the farmer
the poorer and enriching the spec¬
ulator.
In former days a man was cho¬
for office according to his mer¬
it and qualifications. In the pres¬
day through on the
recoinmendat 'U of some politic¬
ian and the good clothes he wears,
