E. II. Baughman, the former
cashier of the People’s bank of
GlcnnviUe, arrested on a charge
of embezzling, was completely
exonerated in the preliminary
hearing before Judge Dickerson
Monday. No incriminating facts
were introduced in evidence and
the warrant was promptly dismiss-
ed.
Many Candidates in Wilcox.
S. F. Reid, of Abbeville, has
announced for sheriff. This makes
the sixth man in the race. John
N- King, a prominent business
man of Rochelle, has announced
for state senator from tho Four¬
teenth senatorial district. This
will make a warm race between
him and John T. King, both of
Rochelle.
Killed 400 Dears.
Waycross, Ga., March 16.—
Obadiah Barber, known over the
entire state as the “King of the
Swamps,” lias the record of hav¬
ing killed in his life time over 400
bears with a ligbtwood knot. This
well known gentleman is nearly
100 years old, and relates most
interesting stories of exciting ex¬
periences he has hacl on his many
hunts in the Okefenokee.

Debating Society,
On last Friday night, sevoral of
the young men of this place, met
and organized a debating society.
Mr. B. W. Cornelius was elected
Chairman and and Mr. J. W. Mat¬
tox, Secretary. A committee was
appointed to write a constitution,
and one to make out a program
for each week. An impromptu de¬
bate was had and several good
speeches were delivered. The So¬
ciety meets every Thursday night.

$3,000 IN GOLD.
The Bank of Homervillo ro-
ceived for deposit on Tuesday
$2,750 in gold, which makes a
bout $3,000.00 of gold on hand
in the Bank’s vaults. This amount
which was recived in settlement,
of a damage suit against the rail¬
road company, was deposited by|

W. T. Dickerson.
The bank was never in a more
healthy condition, as shown by
the books of the bank, and the
deposits, which dropped off dur-
ing the panic, are gradually grow-
ing every day.
A Negra Killed At Edith.
A negro was killed at Edith, in
the lower part of the county, Wed¬
nesday morning, by Mr. Norman
Allen.
Ho was trying to shoot Mr. G,
W. Dongharty with a shot gun,
when Mr. Allen come up,and after
trying to atop him, shot him thru

An inquest held by Mr. u. C.
Register, J. P. justified the killing.
The negro was a bad character
and had been giving a lot of trou¬
ble, and bis death was quite a re¬
lief to both the whites and negroes.
Ice Cream Supper
An ice cream supper was held
last night at the residence of Mrs.
Carswell, for the purpose of rais¬
ing money to buy new song books
for the Baptist church. A large
crowd was out, who had a very
delightful time.
