A resolution whiah it passed by
the senate and concurred in by
the lower house, will mwke a lev
olutionary change in the manner
0 / payment of state officers and
pensioners, went to the senate
this morning from Senator a. O.
Blalock, of the Twenty-sixth dis
trlct,
The resolution provides that the
salaries of teachers, who are held
to be state employes, be placed
upou the same footing with the
salaries of state officials and pen
sionere. If the apportionment
sheet is unable to pay the officers
and the teaeheis as well in fell,
the amount is to be prorated a

and not, as has heretofore been
the custom, issued to the state
officials and pensioners in full and
allow ing ahe teachers to bear t he

Senator Blalock is authority for
the statement that the schools
teachers in the ceuutry and dis
trict common schools have been
for years the goat of the state’s
lack of finances. Whenever there
is a shortage he says, she teachers
are the ones that suffer.
“1 see no reason," said Senator
Blalock, “why the teachers should
forever be the victims of our ina¬
bility to make both ends meet,
while the statehouse officials and
tbe uouutv officers and the pen
siouen- and everybody that draws
money from the state should get
their pay in fall while the teach
ere wait for the coffers to fill up
again. This resolution provides for
a monthly payment "f teachers

Another Big Fire
Homerville has h&d another big
disastrious fire, this time consum
ing the big twostory brick build
ing belonging to Peugler A Dick
erson, and a one story building
belonging to R. G. Dickerson.
The fire occurred early Thurs
day morning abou, 3o’clock. How ■
the fire originated is i
yet unknown,
though it is supposed by some to
have been fired by robbers.
The large building contained'
the big Department store occupied
by A. N. Carswell, and a number
of office rooms on the second floor,
among them being the law offices
of Col. R. G, and Senator W, T.
Dickerson The large libraries
connected with both the above
offices were consumed, there being
rot a penny’s worth of anything
saved from the large building.
The other store that burned was
occupied by The Hughes Co.,
practically everything was saved
from this 3tcre.
Mr. Carswell’s stock was valued
at about $7,0o0. with #3.500.
insurance. The large building val
uedat| 5,500. with #3,500 insur
ance. The smull building valued
at #1,500. with #1,000 insurance,
whiie the Hughes Co. carried
#2,000 insurance
This makes the fifth fire of its
kind in the past few years, all of
them aggregating a loss of some
thing like #75,000..
The stores will be replaced.
