His Only Business.
Boston Globe.
One of the best court-room stories I have
heard fora longtime was concerning one of
the members of the Suffolk bar, a mild
eyed, modest-appearing young man, with
his veins full of Irish blood, and an equal
amount of qui**': Irish wit. He had a rather
tough case in court, and the most important
witness on the opposing side gave his testi
mony in the most clear, direct and con
vincing manner. It was necessary to brerk
that witness in cross-examination ,f possi
ble, and on* quiet disciple of Blackstone
began with:
“Are you in the habit of spending much
of your time in loafing about bar-rooms ?”
The witness, a well-formed specimen of
physical macho' .1, with a somewhat im
portant manner, straightened up, and, with
an indignant gesture and flash of the eye,
replied :
“That is my on a business, sir.”
“Yes,” was the quiet rejoinder. “Now
may I inqr : re if that is your only busin s?”
Stage Girls and Their Admirers.
N. Y. Cor. Troy Times.
What is the rer c on that footlights throw
resplendance round persons who in any
other position would be considered dull?
The chorus girls in our theatres are, to a
majority, from the ranks of decent poverty
and indecent affluence. In either case they
were not, in their previous state, courted by
the fellows who now chase them. One
night a young man <' ,Q ked an usher at the
Casino to carry a bouquet D the 'stage for
a chorus singer. The employe decl'ned,
however, because the demonstration would
have broken into the nerformance inoppor
tunely. Thereupon t.ie adorer carried the
floweii himself down an aisle, stretched
acrcss the orchestra and hand' 1 them to the
object of his rega-d.
“Until two months ago,” said a person
of whom I inquired, “that girl ran a sew
ing machine in a shirt factory, and this
masher wouldn’t have wasted a second
glance at her.”
Fast Railroading.
“Have you ever seen that tra’nof white
cars that makes the fast mail train from
Chicago ?’ asked the engineer, as hemuenh
•d a sandhich ata resting place. “No?
Well, it’s slicker than a square yard of
lightning, and it goc* full pitch out of Chi
cago every morning at 3 o’clock. In my
opinion it’s about the fastest thing in this
c< untry. We ’, one of the mail clerks in
vited h : s wife down to see the tra : n start ;
t)>?< -nuuctor shouted ‘all aboard,’ and the
clerk 1 an 1 over to k’rs his wife, who was
standing on the platform, and bless me if
he didn’t a cow at Riverside. Now,
that’s what I call fast railroad'ng.
What a Descent.
Harper’s Baz.ir,
A lawyer in eastern Connecticut, whose
reputation in the community was not very
high, met an old gentleman one day and
said to b'm, “Do you know Mr. H—, that
I am a direct descendant from Miles Stan
dish?”
“Is it possible?” was the reply. “What
a descent 1”

Is the most complex work of the Creator, and
when this complicated structure, so exqtv
