2 THE FEDERAL CAPITAL WHAT CONGRESS WILL PROB ABLY DO. No Tariff Legislation Likely—Anxiety as to the Course of the Radical Senate Under Cleveland—Personal and Mi nor Mention. Special Correspondence Dally Times. Washington, D. C., Jan. 2.—With its proverbial slowness, Congress can do but lit tle more than pass the appropriation bills There is but little probability of the tariff receiving considerable attention. Even Sena tor Beck, confirmed free trader as he is, says that there is to be no fooling with our system of imports. The whisky men will hardly attempt any Legislation that would be in their favor, for they were very effect ually sat down upon at the last session. There will hardly be any organized attempt to revive the Internal Revenue. In Democratic circles there is undoubt edly a feeling of anxiety as to the favorable course of the Republican majority in the Senate. If the Republicans unite to pro tect Federal office holders under the tenure of-office-act, there will be but few changes during the next two years at least. Such a course would limit the appointments of the Democratic President to the number of commissioned officials whose terms expire under his administration and to the filling of vacancies as they occur from death, resig nation, or other causes. He will not be able to make any removals, except with the as istance of the Senate, so that Democratic aspirants for offices must run the gauntlet of a Republican Senate even after securing a nomination. Miss Rachael Sherman, a daughter of the General, will visit Washington next week, and will divide her time between her aunt’s, Mrs Senator Sherman, and her cousin, Mr-. Senator Cameron. Mrs. Andrew Johnson, a daughter-in-law of the late President, will be the guest this season of Miss Faut, of 1402 K street, north west. Mr. Blaine’s sister, Mother Scholastica, Mother Superior of the convent at Wilkes Barre, Pa., has lately visited the convent here, on Connecticut avenue, and during her stay Mr. P.laine called several times to see his sister. The Chinese Minister, Mr. Cheng Ysao Ju, who is also accredited to Peru, will not return to the United States from Lima be fore next spring. During the absence of Mr. Preston, the Haytian Minister, and with the departure of Count Lewenhaupt, Viscount das Nogue iras, the Portuguese Minister, becomes dean of the diplomatic corps, and headed the line of envoys and ministers who con gratulated the President on New Year’s day. Minister Foster’s daughters have many pleasant souvenirs of their residence ai Madrid, and these two American girls were the objects of sincere attachment on the part of the King’s sister, Princess Eulalie de Bourbon, who sent them many of the por traits and autographs of the members of the royal family which they possess.* Mr. Mo idy, the evangelist, will conduct a convention of Christian workers in this city on the 1 6th, 17th, 18th and 19th of January. He comes at the invitation and urgent request of the Washington pastors. Several Congressmen have promised to aid the movement. Larner. A Celestial Joke. Manchester Times. The love of fun is not unknown among the serious looking Celestials who during the last few years have been collecting in some parts of our Australian colonies. A store keeper, wishing to advertise his articles in the Chinese language, engaged a Celestial to paint him a sign, expecting, of course, that it would be a verv enticing one. It did not answer his expectations, how ever, for the only perceptible effect it had on f’the relations of the sun and moon,” as the Chinese term themselves, was to excite a grin of the broadest dimensions. At length the storekeeper, by a cons derable bribe, obtained a translation in English of the ad vertisement, and found it to be as follcw : “Don’t buy anything here; storekeeper a rogue.” A Novel Indian Treaty. Virginia City Enterprise. About nine years before the discovery of the silver mines of the Comstock a band of about ten Washoe?, on horseback, stole their way into the Cosmo Mountains, where was situated one of the finest orchards of nut pine in the whole country, and set fire to the trees, i scaping into their own territory, near Washoe Lake, through the fleetness of their ponies. This brought on a war, in which the Washoes were badly whippet In the treaty that followed it was stipula ted that nevermore should a Wasl oe appear on horseback; that, should one ap pear on Piute soil mounted, any Piute could dismount him and take his pony. A Tough Thumb Nail. Burlington Free Press. Blobson and Popinjay were talking about the permanences of human influence. “1 do not expect to be long remembered after death,” (remarked Popinjay, “but I have left one mark in the world which will en dure for ages.” “What is that?” asked Blobson. “I have carved my name on the adaman tine rock of the great natural bridge in Virginia - ” “Pohl” remarked B'obson, “I have left a mark which will endure for centuries af ter that rock has decayed. I scratched my initials with'my thumb nail on a restau rant pie yesterday - ” Orange, Mass., May 23, 1883. “My wife was troubled with catarrh of the bladder, Intense pain in kidneys and loins, urinating with great agony. Six bottles of Bust's [Kidney and Liver] Remedy com pletely cured her.”—H. S. Fuller, New Home Sewing Machine Company. “ROUGH ON RATS.” Clears cut rats, mice, roaches, flies, ants r.ed-bugs, skunks, chipmunks, gophers. l-5< Druggists. A CAHD. To all who are suffering from the errors and indiscretions of youth, nervous weakness, early decay, loss of manhood, etc., I will send a receipt that will cure you, free of charge, This great remedy was discovered by a missionary in South America. Send a self-addressed envelope to the Bev. Joseph T. Inman, Station D, New York City. THE SAVANNAH DAILY TIMES, SUNDAY, JANUARY 4, 1885. EMPHATIC GUARANTEES. Which Are Justified by an Extraordinary Public Experience. To the Public.—Greeting : As the conductors of the largest business of the kind in the world (and therefore having an extraordinary experience), we fe--l justified in making the following statements: Our Theory Proved. First.—We have held from the begin -5 ning that most of the common ailments are - caused primarily by kidney and liver dis orders, not primarily by bad blood; that r bad blood is caused by temporary or chronic 1 derangement of the kidneys and liver, and • that by restoring these blood-purifying or , gans to health, we could cure meet of the common ailments. Other practitioners . however, have held that extreme kidney and liver disorders were incurable. We 1 have proved to the contrary in thousands ■ of cases. Safeguards Against Epidemics. Second.—The kidneys and liver are the sewers of the system, and unless they are kept in perfect working order no amount of public sanitation can prevent epidemics rag ing among the people. The prudent man, in the winter and spring, will fortify the system against any - such possibility. Dr. Koch, the celebrated German Scientist and physician, says, for instance, that cholera will have but little effect among those who keep the digestive organs and the kidneys and liver in healthful operation. Warner’s Safe Remedies are the best scientific cura tives and preventives, and should be used now as a safeguard against any future ! scourge. Scientific Specifics. Third—We do not cure every known ■ disease from one bottle, for Warner’s Safe I Remedies number seven scientific specifics, which have been put upon the market, only f in obedience to strong public demand. - Recognized Standards. Fourth—Warner’s Safe Remedies, spite of all opposition, have won the favor of the profession as well as the {masses, and are recognized as the leading standard medical ' preparations. Strong Guarantees. Fifth—After six years of unequaled ex perience, we can give these unqur-lified guarantees: GUARANTEE I.—Pure and Harmless That Warner’s Safe Remedies are pure and harmless. GUARANTEE ll.—Testimonials Gen uine. That the Testimonials used by us, so far as we know, are bona fide, wtth a forfeit of $5,000 for proof to the contrary. GUARANTEE lll.—Curative Effects Permanent. That Warner’s Safe Reme dies are not merely temporary, but perma nent, in their curative effects and will sus tain every claim, if used sufficiently and as directed. Proofs of Permanency. Sixth.—Special inquiry among hundreds of our oldest patients results in unequivocal testimony that the cures wrought six, five, four and three years ago, were permanent. And most of these patients were pronounced incurable when they began Warner’s Safe Remedies. Read a few of thousands of testimonials. B. J. WORRELL, Ellaville, Fla., in 1879, was prostrated with Bright’s Disease ot f the Kidneys; 60 bottles of Warner’s Safe I Cure restored him to health. In 1884 he : aid: “I have been cured four years, and i my case is miraculous.” Mr. W.’s case and cure are certified to by ex-Gov. G. F Drew. N. P. CHEDESTER, Asheville, N. C, was cured of Sprained Back and Rheu matism in 1881 by Warner’s Safe Cure, ’ and November 28th, 1884, he wrote: “1 : have since been sound and well.” 1 Rev. J. P. ARNOLD, Camden, Tenn., for j ten years suffered from Abscesses; in 1881 1 he began to use Warner’s Safe Cure, and in June, 1884, he wrote: “My health is as ’ good as ever.” - DAVID TOOKE, Columbus, Tex., in 1880, i was cured of Black Jaundice and Hem ? orrhage of the Kidneys, by Warner’s Safe i Cure. July Ist, 1884, he wrote: “My i health has since been excellent.” > Ex-Gov. R. T. JACOBS Westport, Ky , was prostrated tn 1882 with severe Kidney • disorders, and lost 40 pounds of flesh. He 1 used Warner’s Safe Cure in 1882,and June 23d, 1884, he wrote: “I have never en joyed better health, all owing to Warner’s Safe Cure.” CHARLES E. STEPHENS, 1,223 3rd f st., L< uisville, Ky., in 1882 used Warner’s f Safe Cure for his daughter who had Bright’s r disease, and had been given up as incurable s by the best physicians. In November, 1884, - he reported that she was in excellent health, ) and gave the credit wholly to Warner’s Safe Cure. f W. E. ANDERSON, Black Water, Floi i ida, Past Grand Master Mason of the State, . was cured of serious Kidney and Liver dis order in 1882, and in November, 1884, he s reported his health as excellent since War ner’s Safe Cure restored him. 1 Seventh. —It is a source of great grati- fication to us that Warner’s Safe Remedies have been permanently benficial to so many sufferers. “This permanency of power over disease gives them the most exalted rank. , and in this particular they have no equal.” [ H. Bradfield—Dear Sir: Some fifteen years ago I examined the recipe of Female Regulator, and carefully studied authorities in regard to its components, and then—as well as now—pronounce It to be the most sci entific and skillful combination of the reallj reliable remedial vegetable agents known to science, to act directly on the womb and uter ine organs, and the organs and parts sympa thizing directly with these; and, therefore, providing a specific remedy for all diseases of the womb and of the adjacent organs and parts.
