AMERICAN HUMOR.
A girl whom the politicians hate: Carrie
Cature.
It takes the exit of a very large man to
make a hole in this world.
A Michigan couple were married one day
and divorced the next. She had bad luck
with her first pie.
Inquirer asks: “Why is it that so many
dogs have flea*? ’ To be perfectly honest we
think it is because there are so many
fleas.
A prudent man advised his drunken ser
vant to put by his money for a rainy
day. In a few days his master asked him
hew much he had saved. “Faith, none at
all,” said he, “it rained yesterday and it all
went.”
The plea of a Nashville negro, convicted
of butting an enemy almost fatally, was
that in infancy he had been fed on milk
from a notoriously belligerent goat. The
Judge said that he could not regard that
fact as an extenuation.
“Fifty dollars bid, gentlemen,” cried the
auctioneer, at an art sale; “only fifty dollars
for this fine landscape, with its flowers,
trees, water, atmosphere? And such an at
mosphere! Why, the atmosphere alone is
worth the money.”
“A person can do anything on these roller
skates that is possible to do on the ice,”
explained the attendant at the skating rink
the other day. “Well, I believe that is so,”
replied a bystander, “I knew a man to break
his nose the other day”’
“What is the meaning of ex nihilo nihil
fit?” asked a Highlander of a schoolmaster.
“Weel, Donald,” answered the pedagogue,
“I dinna mind the literal translation, but it
just means that ye canna tak’ the breeks ass
a Highlandman ”
At a party in Harlem on New Years Eve
a young lady began a song: “The Autumn
days are come; ten thosand leaves are falling.”
She began too high. “Ten thousand!” she
screamed, and stopped “Start her at five
thousand!” cried an auctioneer present.
A lawyer walked down the street yester
day with his length of arm taxed to hold a
lot of law books: “Why, I thought you car
ried all that stuff in your head?” “I do,”
quietly replied the lawyer, with a knowing
wink, “these are for the Supreme Court
J udges.”
A wit of a Postcffice turn of mind ev fives
the following: “A married woman is a letter
which has reached its address. A young
girl is a letter not yet addressed. An old
maid is a letter which has been forgotten
and sent to the dead-letter office.”
‘ ROUGH ON TOOTHACHE.”
