Ax Exceed!ugly Rare Work of Art.
Toronto Grip.
An ambitious young artist painted a pic
ture that he thought wrs an improvement
on anything Raphael, or any of those old
fellows, had hung up defore the world, and
he carried it to an artist named Farney for
inspection.
“Um—ah —um,” said Mr F , looking at it
sharply, “did you do this without any out
side aid ?”
“Yes, sir,” responded the amateur, with a
ri«ing pride.
“Um—ah—um,” continu d Farny, “it is
a rare picture, s : r, a rare picture.”
“Ah, Mr. Farny, thank you, thank you
very much, indeed,” stammered the young
ster, nearly tickled the deaths
“Don’t mention it, sir. It’s a rare pic
ture, sir; quite rare; in fact, it is only half
done; 1 might say it is almost raw.”
He Didn’t Chase the Antelope Over the
Plain A-tor All.
Chicago Sun.
“I am invited out to a ‘stag’ supper, Ma
ria,” said Mr. Jones the other evening.
“You needn’t sit up for me.”
“Well, don’t eat too much ver 'son, Jep
tha,” suggested Mrs. Jones.
“Venison?” queried Jones. “Oh—ah —
hem. I see. No, dear; I won’t.”.
At midnight Jones came stagger ig home
singing loudly:
“I’ll chase the antelope over the plain—
“No, you won’t,” said his wife as she met
him at the door. Murder wrs in her eye
and a night lamp in her hand.
“Maria,” he hiccough 1, “don’t scold,
buck-cause I’ve taken a horn too much. I’ll
n-e-v-e-r doe it again.”
At this point the door slammed to.
He Knew He Wasn’tln Heaven When He
Saw the Doctor.
Merchant Traveler.
“I thought I was in heaven, doctor,” said
the patient, “and there was no more pain,
no more sorrow, no more sleepless nights.
The birds sang as I had never heard them
sing before; the trees bore the richest, rarest
fruits; the grass was like velvet, threaded
with silver, where the pleasant waters
flowed; the air was a harmony of May and
October, and there was over all the ineffa
ble sweetness of rest and joy. It was life
and love and hope, and—and —”
The patient put his hand to his head
wearily.
“And I disturbed the dream?” asked the
doctor.
“Yes; doctor, when I saw you, I knew it
wasn’t heaven, or if it was, that you were in
the wrong house, and I awoke.”
An Anti-Monopolist Who Won’t Be Heard
From.
Wall Street News.
“Yes, my friends, yes!” he thundered as
he waved his arm around and grew red in
the face. “These railroads are the leeches
of the land! They are sucking the life
blood of industry! If elected to the Legis
lature, my first and last and greatest effort
shall be directed to putting the harness on
this rampant racer of monopoly!”
He was elected last November. He start
ed for Albany yesterday and a crowd of his
constituents was at the depot to cheer him
off.
“Yes, my friends, we will humble this
monopoly,” he said, from a rear platform;
and then taking a seat the car he got his
railroad pass ready to show the conductor.
