Ohio is ahead again. Bhe had a greater

State.
The legal profession in the State of New
York has increased in the last seven years at
ihe rate of 17 per cent., whereas the medi
cal has increased at the rate of 3.
Building operations in Philadelphia dur
ing the past year showed great activity.
The total’ number of new structures erected
was 4,298, against 8,727 in 1883 and 2,220
in 1832-
The Rothschilds have succeeded in pre
serving their old homestead, the house of
the red shield, in Jew’s Lane, Frankfort

adjoining house into a repository of family
relics.
Lord Chief Justice Coleridge has granted

The Shah of Persia, with the purpose of

Cuba’s 2,000,000 of people have to pay
814,000,000 a year for the support of the
army and navy that keep them in subjec
tion. Though the island yields Spain a
revenue of $37,000,000, there is a deficit of
$9,000,000 in the Cuban budget, and the cus

loans, and still troops and contractors are
unpaid and mutinous.
Statistics show that during the past year
about 3,500,000,000 cigars were manufac

stands pre-eminent in the extent of her

are in that State over 4,000 factories, turn
ing out over 1,000,000,000 cigars annually.
Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois rank di
rectly after New York State.
The German people, who were only 25,-
000,000 in 1816, are now 45,500,000, and
their present rate of increase is greater than
that of any European race. The popula
tion, which in France only increases by 26
a vear for every 10,000 and in Great Britain
’ by only 101, increases in Germany 115, and
this in spite of a vast emigration which,
since 1816, has carried away 3,500,000,

A Peroration Which Caused a Smile.
Peck’s Sun.
The writer attended church last Sunday
evening and learned more about Francis
Asbury, the first Methodist Episcopal
Bi'hop in America, than he would have
learned by reading Watt’s hymns clean
through. The discourse was an eloquent
one, and the discourser became infused with
the military spirit of the good old Bishop.
"In considering such characters as the Duke
of Wellington, Washington and Francis
Asbury,” said he, “I feel thrilled to the very
bottom.” Perhaps he meant to add, “of my
heart,” but he didn’t, and then again per
haps he meant just exactly what he said.
The peroration caused some smiles, but no
levity.
Rat Traps at Texas Pacific Figures.
Wall Street News.
fHe had a dozen rat traps slung over his
shoulder as he promenaded up New street
in search of customers, and when asked the
price he replied : ,
“Down—way down. Rat traps have fol
lowed Wabash, and you can take your pic
for 50 cents.”
“But that’s too high.”
“Well, being as Western Union has
shrunk you can take one at 45.
“Too high.”
“What! Well, I must follow New York
Central. We’ll say 40.”
“Come down.”
“Say, mister, do you want a rat trap at
Texas' Pacific figures ?” asked the old
man.
“What are they ?”
“Why you take a trap for nothing and
I’ll give you a quarter to buy cheese with.”
“ROUGH ON RATS.”
