F POPULAR SCIENCE,
The Surinam toad has no tongue.
In the spermaceti whale the teeth are
fixed to the gum.
The humble bee moults at least ten times
before arriving at the winged state.
Scorpions and spiders properly feed upon
the juices of their victims after lacerating
them with their jaws, yet fragments of
insects have been sometimes found in their
stomachs.
The common spider, which constructs
with almost geometrical p-ecisiou its net of
spiral and radiating threads, will finish one
in forty minutes, and just as regularly if
confined in a perfectly dark place.
The life of quadrupeds generally reaches
its extreme limit when the molar teeth are
worn down. Those of the sheep last about
fifteen years, of the ox twenty, of the horse
forty and of the elephant 100. Many infe
rior species die us soon as they have laid
their eggs, just as herbs perish as soon as
> they have flowered.
A coral reef is formed by many corals
growing together. It is to the single coral
stock as a forest is to the tree. All reefs
begin as fringing reefs, and are gradually
changed into other forms by the slow sink
ing to the bottom of the ocean. This
sinking must be slower than the upward
growth of the reef, else it would be drown
ed out. Probably the reef does not grow
more than five feet in a thousand years,
and as reefs are often more than 2,000 feet
thick they must necessarily be very old.
Swimmiug birds, which constitute about
one-fourteenth of the entire class, from
one-half the whole number in Greenlaud.
As we approach the tropics the variety and
number of land birds increase. Those of the
torrid zone are noted for their brilliant
plumage, and the temperate zones for their
more sober hues but sweeter voices. India
and South America are the richest regions:
Hummars, tanagers, and orioles are re
stricted to the New World. Parrots are
found in every continent except Europe,
and woodpeckers occur everywhere, save
in Australia.
A tadpole, the larva of the frog, has a
tail and no legs, gills instead of lungs, »
heart precisely like that of a fish, a horny
beak for eating vegetable food, and a spiral
intestine to digest it. As it matures its
hinder legs show themselves, then the front
pair; the beak falls oil ; the tail and gills
waste away; the lungs are created; the di
gestive appartus is changed to suit an ani
mal diet, the heart is altered to the rep
tilian type by the addition of another auri
cle; in fact, skin muscles, nerves, bones and
blood vessels vanish, being absorbed atom
by atom, and a new set is ■substituted.
One Hero Heard From.
Peck’s Sun.
A correspondent writes to inquire some
thing about statues. She says she fre
quently reads of a statue being erected, and
the papers say that it is of “heroic size,”
and she wants to know what “heroicsize” is.
Well, ask any hero, and he will tell you it
is about his size. For instance, a statue
about five feet ten inches high, blonde,
bald headed, about 36 ■ inches around the
waist, and wearing a seven and a half boot,
we should think would be about “heroic
size,” though we may be prejudied in favor
of that size. Ask some other hero, please.
