A St. Louis man is so lazy that he has
worked but once, and that was when he was
laboring under a mistake. —South and \\ est.
Have we cannibals amongst us? The fol
lowing advertisement appears in a contem
porary: “Wanted—A plain girl to cook.”
New York Journal.
A ten-hundred-and seventy-six-pound hog
is Utah’s contribution to the New Orleans
show. To correct any misapprehensions, it
is well to say that it is of the four-footed
variety.
It is said that a violin played among a
flock of geese will start them to dancing.
Everyone who has attended a dance is aware
of this fact.—Newman Independent.
In one species of spider the female is
three hundred limes larger than the male.
It is unnecessary to remark that the hus
band never gets into bed with his boots on.
—Boston Globe.
A Baltimore mechanic has invented an
infernal machine which closely resembles a
turnip. The shape of a cucumber would be
more appropriate for an infernal or inter
nal-machine. A cucumber bears the rep
utation of possessing more latent war and
internal strife than a cart load of turnips.
—Norristown Herald.
A new kind of lamp recently invented is
called the “sweetheart.” The reason for the
adoption of this name is probably because it
never goes out until after midnight, unless
the old man comes into the parlor and goes
to shaking down the stove.—Lowell Citizen.
1 story is told of a country parson who
went to preach in a remote parish church.
The sexton, in taking him to the chapel,
depreciatingly said, “I hope your rever
ence won’t mind preaching from the chan
cel Ye see, the chapel’s a quiet place, an
I’ve got a duck settin’ on fourteen eggs in
the pulpit.”
A young widow, in erecting a monument
to the “dear departed,” cleverly availed
herself of the opportunity to inscribe on the
tomb, “Sacred to the memory of Matbusin
Benuchet, who departed this life aged 68
years, regretting the necessity of parting
from the most charming and best of women.
Mrs. "laindame, after looking long and
though t'ully at a plaster cast of Shakespeare
remarked, “Poor man, how pale he was .
He couldn’t have been well when he was
taken.” “ No,” replied Fogg,, he was
dead.” “Ah, that accounts for it, said Mrs.
P. drawing a sympathetic breath.
“Here, leek here,” said the old lady to
her daughter, “the cold weather is on,
times are hard, money tight, coal costs
money, can’t you get that waiter-on o yourn
up to popping point, so that he can begin
to understand what it costs for oil .
“Mother,” replied the girl, “we don t need
any light but what the fire gives.
Kept His Word For Once.
She had had a hard trial with him dur
ing his life, but had meekly borne her lot.
Now the end had come and he was passing
away. As she bent over him he looked up
and said faintly:
“I’m going,” and he went.
“He’s gone,” she said, wiping her eyes;
“poor fellow, its the first time I ever knew
him to keep his word.”
