The British turf has gained an accession
in the person of the Earl of Rocksavage,
who succeeds to the title and estates of his
grandfather, to the late Marquis of Chol
mondeley. The Earl retired from the turf
last February at the request of the Marquis,
but now that he is dead, he can indulge his
love for sport without incurring displeasure
from headquarters.
The artesian well business is being prose
cuted to some extent in Asbury Park, X. J.,
where a test was made recently of a well s
sufficiency as a supply for fire purposes. The
engine a’t first pumped 84 gallons per
minute, and afterwards IQO gallons. The
natural flow of the well is about 40,000 gal
lons per day. The test demonstrated that
the flow could be increased by pumping
to over 110,000 gallons per day.
A little strip of sidewalk, about five feet
wide, in front of the United States Court
House in Boston, is constantly the refuge of
the street peddlers of bouquets who wish to
evade the payment of the license fee which
the city ordinances require. As the strip
is the property of the United States, they
can here bid defiance to the police, but it
not infrequently happens that their eager
ness to sell lures them out, and then, if
caught, they are brought to court and fined.
Natural gas still makes the problem of ex
istence in Pittsburg and Alleghany a little
more uncertain than elsewhere. It keeps
on exploding on the most unlooked for occa
sions and in the most unheard of places.
The citizens of Alleghany City, who object
to being unceremoniously blown through
the roofs of their residences without warn
ing, are petitioning the Councils to prohibit
the laying of gas pipes except under the
supervision of the city officials. If they
must be blown up they want to be sure it is
done according to law.
A hundred and fifty millions of tons of
matter in solution, in addition to suspended
matter, are poured down ito the Gulf of
Mexico by the Mississippi. If this quantity
is added to that known to be carried down
in suspension, it will reduce 6,000 years to
4,500 years the time necessary to lower the
entire basin one foot. Similar calculations
have been applied to the La Plata, St. Law
rence and Amazon by Mr. T. M. Beade,
who thus finds that one hundred tons per
square mile are annually removed from the
American continent. This agrees with re
sults previously arrived at for Europe.
A description of a Chinese bride’s dress;
It was of pale blue hiplong, trimmed with
rare old toyah, while the trousers were of
six full lengths of yellow sigee. Her hair
was dressed a Ja Hong Kong, there being no
bangs of any description. Her charming
little feet were half hidden in bewitching
pair of silk slippers, with the heels knocked
off. The vision of loveliness was placed in a
closed carriage and driven to the apart
ments of the bridegroom, who was wonder
ing what sort of a companion his relatives
and friends had selected for him. He, of
course, had never seen her.
Thousands Hastened to Their Graves.
By relying on testimonials written in vivid
glowing language of some miraculous cures
made by some largely puffed up doctor or
patent medicine has hastened thousaned
to their graves: the readers hav
ing almost insane faith that the same miracle
■will be performed on them, that these testi
monials mention, while the so called medi
cine is all the time hastening them to their
graves. Although we have
Thousands Upon Thousands!!!
of testimonials of the most wonderful cures,
voluntarily sent us, we do not publish them,
as tbev do nor. make the cures. It is our
medicine, Hop Bitters, that make the cures.
It has never tailed and never can. We will
give reference to any one for any disease simi
lar to their own if desired, or will refer to any
neighbor, as there is not a neighborhood in
the known world but can show its cures by
Hop Bitters
A Losing Joke.
“A prominent physician of Pittsburg said
“to a lady patient who was complaining of
“her continued ill health, and of his inability
"to cure her, jokingly said : “Try Hop Bit
“iers 1” The lady took it in earnest and used
“theßitters, from which she obtained per
“manent health. She now laughed at the
“doctor for his joke, but he is not so well
• “pleased with it, as it cost him a good
“patient.
Fees oi Doctors.
The fee of doctors at 83.00 a visit would tax
a man for a year, and in need of a daily visit,
over 81,000 a year for medical attendance
alone! And one single bottle of Hop Bi ters
■taken in time would save the 81,000 and all
the year’s sickness.
Given up by the Doctors.
“Is it possible that Mr. Godfrey is up and at
-work, and cured by so simple a remedy?”
“I assure you it is true that he is entirely
cured, and with nothing but Hop Bitters,
and only ten days ago bis doctors gave him
tip and said he must die, from Kidney and
liver trouble 1”
hg-None genuine without a bunch of green
Hops on the white label. Shun all the vile,
poisonous stuff with “Hop” or “Hops ’ in
their name.
