On opening a head of cabbage the other
day, the cook of a hotel at Lockport, N. Y,
found a document stating that the world
would come to an end on the 3d of July
next. Predictions of that kind usually come
from cabbage heads, however. —Philadelphia
Call.
“Yes, my boy,” said an old minister to his
son, who was going out to battle with the
world, “he is as wise as a serpent and as
harmless as a do~e; but if you forget any
part of this advice do not forget that part
about being as wise as a serpent.”—Boston
A Keap street old maid was confined to
her bed on account of a relaxation of the
nerves. During leap year she had them
strung to too nigh a tension, and when the
oldj year died out she collapsed. She will
be fully recovered four years hence. —Brook-
lyntimes.
Two little girls, the eldest being about
six years old, entered a confectionery store.
“What can I do for you?” asked the clerk
“lf you please,” said the larger of the two,
“just give that little child,” pointing to the
four-year-old, “five cents worth of candy.”—

Stanley, the African explorer, departing
left behind him a very pretty New York
girl, with tear-dimmed eyes, vowing eternal
constancy. Returning he found her the wife
of another and mother of a bouncing boy
This is his romance, and he is still a bache
lor.—Philadelphia Record.
A couple appeared before a Georgia min
ister and requested him id marry them. As
they had no license and the bride was under
age, the preacher refused, but after tbeir
importunities he took them to a point
where three counties met, and placing
them in different counties, he himself
straddled the county line and made them
one.—Chicago News
A scientist states that bees do not begin
to gather honey until they are sixteen days
old. For sixteen ever to-be-remembered
days, we suppose, they devote themselves to
the delirious pleasure of crawling up the
legs of grangers and bumbling under the
skirts of terrified summer boarders. Life
is not all a time of grinding toil even with
busy bees.—Burlington Free Press.
Chicago Socialists have been thrown into
a state of frenzy by the speech of a small
boy who managed to get possession of one of
their platforms. Among the heresies ut
tered by the small boy were the following:
“Those who claim that lazy men will work
when everything is equal, lie” “A lazy
man will always be lazy.” “Tramps can get
work when they want it, but they never
want it.” —Philadelphia Call.
When old Judge Jowler was tucked in his
little bed by Mrs. Mouser he couldn’t sleep a
wink until the excellent woman had brought
a bottle of Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup. Then he
crossed his little hands and sunk into sweet
repose.
