2 Civil Rights in a Skating Rink. Boston has a civil rights case. A Scotch man named McKay built a skating rink it the Highlands last year and tilted it up in a luxurious manner. He charged twice as much for admission as was asked at any other rink in Boston, and catered for the best and wealthiest classes. He refused admission to none, but refused to permit any one to skate whose color or appearance did not suit him. Recently two colored men, one of them a member of the Suffolk county bar, went in and were refused skate checks. It was in vain that they offered .money and theatened to sue the proprietor. The Scotchman was characteristically firm and told the . colored men plainly that his only objection to them was on the ground of their color. A warrant was issued for McKay’s arrest, and Saturday he appeared in court to answer the charge of violating section 29, chapter 207, of the public statutes, which reads as fol lows: “Whoever makes any distinction, discrimination or restriction on account of ■color, or race, or except for good cause, in respect to the admission of any person too or his treatment in, a public place of amuse ment, public conveyance, public meeting or licensed inn, shall be punished by a fine not exceeding $50.” The case was postponed to allow the de fendant time to prepare his case. Much interest is awakened in the proceedings, and both parties express a purpose to fight it to the end. The Mexican in Hia Glory. A letter from the City of Mexico says : A Mexican grandee in equestrian costume is the most stunning sight to be seen in the entire country. He often, including bis saddle, wears a thousand dollars’ worth of clothes and things. From the crown of his head to the soles of his feet he is a thing to be admired and wondered at. Beginning at the top, his sombrero costs anywhere from SSO to $l5O. No thoroughbred gentleman ■ever wearsone worth lees thans2s, and even the man who blacks your boots has as much and sometimes more invested in his hat. A friend of mine, who was away all summer, paid his footman $42 back wages on his return. The fellow spent $25 for a sombrero and gave the balance to his family. Then the equestrian has a hand somely embroidered velvet or cassimere jacket, a pale pink sash, a silver mounted belt, a sword that is worth SSO or $75, solid silver buttons, sometimes in double rows, with loops or chains down the seams of his trousers, which are often of leather. Then his silver spurs and patent-leather be its sit gracefully upon a siiver-piate stirrup which is attached to a saddle that may be worth anywhere from SSO to SSOO. Suits for boys 10 and 12 years of age, with an outfit from sombrero to sword, can be purchased, and are often seen on dusky youngsters rid ing out with their papas or grooms.” Why She Let Him Assist. Oil City Derrick. “Weally, ah, 1 beg youah pardon, miss, if I intrude,” said a dude from Cincinnati, the other evening, on discovering a pretty girl milking a cow. ‘No intrusion, sir,” said the girl, blushing like a rose. “Ah, my dear damsel, cawn’t I assist you?” “Certainly, sir. Just stand where the cow can see you.” “Os course I will, me chawmer; but what ■do you want the cow to see me foah?” “She will think you’re a calf and give down her milk faster.” Another Brute Heard From. Philadelphia Call. Mrs. De Blank—There, now, John, just read that and maybe you will throw away that horrid cigar! Mr. De Blank—Read what? “Why, this in the paper. A member of the recent Woman’s Congress says ‘it is -a nice thing for a man to keep his mouth fit to be kissed.’ ” “Humph 1 That may all be; but it is also a nice thing for a woman to keep her mouth in the right position to be kissed.” “ I’he right position?” “Yes—shut.” Overwhelming Evidence. Customer, “I would take the coat, Mr. Isaacstein, but it smells musty,” Mr. Isaacstein, “Dot goat musty? Jacob, xnein son, schmell dot goat.” Jacob (smelling of the coat), “I no schmell de goat musty. ” Mr. Isaacstein (with a superior smile), “See dot nose ? He no schmell dot goat musty.” The kineys cleanse the system. It is im portant to keep them healthful and active, and this is best done witli Hunt's [Kidney and Liver] Remedy. That man would grumble at any thing ar.d every thing, without reason; but this week we heard a gentleman grumble with good reason. He bought a suit of clothes and paid a good old fashioned price for it, and, hap pening to come into the “ Famous,” he was shown a suit of the same class of goods, and our price was $8 less than he had paid.
