The historic Calais, in France, has nar
rowly escaped the danger of losing its name.
The old town of Calais, with 13,000 inhab
itants, and the old town of St. Pierre-les-
Calais, are to be made into one municipality,
and it was proposed that the new borough
should not be called Calais, but St. Pierre
les-Calais, which would soon have become
plain St. Pierre. Owing, perhaps, to the
arguments of the biographer of Joan of Arc,
M. Wallon, the Senate decided that the old
name, Calais, should remain.
The tunneling of Mont Blanc is once
more occupying French engineers. The
projected line byway of Mont Blanc would
lead from Chamounix to Aosta, in Italy,
thus effecting direct communication with
Turin. The estimated cost is 80,000,000
francs, and the excavation of the tunnel
would, it is computed, occupy six or seven
years. But this is not the only new Alpine
tunnel contemplated. The Grand as well
as the Petit St. Bernard is also *to have its
tunnel, so say enthusiastic promoters.
