Mistaken Identity.
To day, in the City Court, Mr. William
Steffens was tried for keeping an open tip
pling house on the Sabbath day. An inci
dent occurred which was very amusing to
all present. The witness on the stand was
asked if the prisoner was known to him as
William Stefiens. “Yes, that is William
Steffens, and I was in his place on Sunday.
“You know him, do you?’’ “Yes; have known
him for the last ten years. It was proved
that the prisoner was not William but Iheo
dore Steffens, his brother William being at
the time down in the Ordinary s office.
When together the two are so much alike
that it is impossible to distinguish between
them They were dressed very nearly alike
to-day. Their places of business are also on
the same street, and defendant’s counsel
argued that if the witness was mistaken as to
the identity of the man he might also be
mistaken as to the location of his place of
business, hence the defendant was pro
nounced not guilty.
Special Rhea Matinee To-Morrow After
hood,
Mr. James W- Morrissey, M wager for
Mademoiselle Rhea, takes great pleasure
in announcing that at the urgent request of
some hundreds of ladies, Mlle. Rhea will
appear at a grand reception matinee to
morrow afternoon at the Theatre at 2 o’clock.
“The American Countess,” surrounded with
the Royal Costumes of the Queen of Hol
land, superb scenes and the original music
by Arditi, of Her Majesty’s opera, will be
the play for the matinee. The prices will
be popular. In order that all our people
may have an opportunity to see this beauti-
Ail woman and admire her glorious acting,
the management has fixed the following low
prices : 50 cents, 75 cents and fl, accord
ing to location. The Theatre will no doubt
be packed with the youth and beauty of
Savannah.
Blind Tom.
Last evening Blind Tom played to a large
and elegant audience at the Opera House
of the Ford Dramatic Association. The
entertainment was equal, if not superior, to
that of evening previous The matinee
this afternoon and the performance to-night
will close the engagement of this musical
prodigy.
