Another evidence that the Chinamen, in
this country are learning the ways of civili
zation is furnished in the fact that two of
them in San Francisco have become prize
fighters.
Mrs. Mark Hopkins has built anew house
so costly that its addition to the valuation
of the little Massachusetts town of Great
Barrington lowers the tax of the towns
people by about one-half.
The richest Chinaman in America is Ah
Ti, of La Porte, Cal., who is worth $2,000,-
000 He made money mining, and will re
pair to the Flowery Kingdom to enjoy it as
soon as bis business can be settled up.
While praying during a recent storm, says
the Natchez (Miss.) Daily Democrat, “old
Katie Hightower, who has been blind for
fifteen yeata, had her sight suddenly re
stored, "and can now see as well as when a
child.”
Moses, the South Carolina statesman, is
not altogether happy in East Cambridge
(Mass.) jail. Colonel Higginson went to see
him there the other day and found him
considerably broken in health and spirits,
and thinks his mind is disordered.
A Somerville high-school boy went to
sleep the other day in a “Hamlet” recita
tion. When his name had been called a
number of times and he had slowly opened
his eyes, it seemed a strange coincidence
that the passage allotted to him should be,
“I am thy father’s ghost.” The class roared
with laughter, and that boy doesn’t go to
sleep in recitations any more.
Cln the London Medical Record a man
advertises to furnish “tuition by correspond
ence,” so that theological, medical, pharma
ceutical and civil service examinations may
be passed by men and women of average
capacity. Strict secrecy is maintained, and
arrangements may be made with candidates
until successful.
An Arizona editor having got his rival in
jail for assault and battery, thus gloats oyer
him: “Our quondam contemporary is lying
as usual—this time in jail. We understand
that the saloon keepers are moving heaven
and earth to get him out, as their business
has fallen off since he has been cooped.
When he gets out what a thirst he will
have.”
In the village of East Hampton, L. 1.,
is a white marble monument erected by the
villagers to the memory of the crew of the
ship John Milton, which was wrecked on
the rocks at Montauk Point in 1858. The
crew, twenty in number, lie buried, in a
circle around the monument. Directly
across the road from the monument is an
old fashioned house, with shingled sides,
the “Home, Sweet Home” of John Howard
Payne.
