A St. Louis man, who was recently accus ed of swindling twelve of the leading law yers of Texas, has framed the charge and uses it as a diploma. He is also a lawyer. —Chicago Times. The New York police are getting nervous. A tin spice box lying in the gutter fills them with dread. They are careful to drop it into water, and they are shy about taking it out. —New Haven News. John Bull has been looking for some time for somebody to tread on the tail of his coat; but now that he has found him he is willing to acknowledge that he did not expect so heavy a man. —Boston Post. The Hon. Charles Carroll, of Shawnee town, has our thanks for a neat and well executed check. We transferred it into bacon, and are transferring the bacon into brawn and brains.—Benton (Hl.) The woman who shot O’Donovan Rossa in the back says if she had aimed a little higher the bullet would have struck him in the corner of the mouth, as he was smiling at the time.—Newman Indepen dent. Many Southern railway companies have this year placed their old cross ties at the disposal of the mayors of towns along the lines of their roads, to be distributed to de serving poor people for firewood.—Chicago Herald. “I believe,” said the doctor, “that whis ky hardens the brain.” “No doubt of it,” acquiesced his associate. “How do you know?’ 1 “Ob, I’ve noticed that when you get full your eyes have a stony stare.”—N.
