The Loves of the Midgets.'
Some of the tales of the stage people are
so neat and romantic that they wall deserve
to be published. The little Widow Thumb’s
betrothal to the Count Rosebud is a fact to
which fanciful embellishments are constant
ly being added. Here is one which has not
heretofore got into publicity. There is a
Maj. Newell in the company which Mrs-
Thumb has brought to a Bowery museum.
He is a song and dance man of average siz u ,
physically and rrtistically. Few of the vis
itors recognize him as ah ex-midget. His
period of dwarfhood ended about six years
ago, when he took to growing in a manner
which soon destroyed his value as a curios
ity.
Well, they will tell you in the museum
now that he is a devoted 1 tverof the widow;
that he wooed her immediately after the
death of Tom Thumb; that she might have
returned his smtiment, but would not per
mit herself to wed a man so ill-assortedly
tall; and that, because he has lost his little,
ness, the major is compelled to see a bit of
Italian in the person of Count Rosebud
unmeriloriously win thepriz*. And this is
why he is sad wbil ■ he daacf-s, and his jov
ial s mgs are the hollow m >ckery of a broken
heart. —Blakel* Hall.
Death of the Czar’s Cook.
London Truth.
I hive just seen a gentleman from Russia
who informs me that the Czar’s cook is dead.
This may not seem very startling news, but
this cook has been for years as well known
in Russia as John B-own was in Scotland.
This extraordinary Italian, who for some
time had been cook in the imperial kitchen
of the Czir’s illustrious father, rose, under
the present Emperor, to be head over all
the imperial servants. Then he became
steward of the househo’d and confidential
attendant and adviser of the present E n
peror, who, it is said, consulted him on all
questiins—even on those referring to the
weightiest matters of State. His loss to the
Emperor will be irreparable, as no one had
so much influence over h-.s Majesty or was
so much in his confi fence. His name was
Ingano.
Too Much Curiosity.
Texas Siftings.
The new servant girl came to her mistress
crying and holding on to her finger.
“What’s the matter?’’ asked the lady of
the house.
“I run one of the forks into my hand, and
if it is this plated stuff I’ll get the lock
jaw.’’
“Don’t be altrmed,” said the mistress,
“all my silver is genuine. I don’t keep any
plated ware.”
Next morning the gill was gone, and so
was the silver.
