Hermuda for Invalids.
ICroffut’s Letter.]
As a spot for invalids I am afraid Ber
muda has been overrated. No consumptive
should come here unless he wishes to die.
There is, of course, no malaria bore, and the
ailments that thrive on malaria are unknown.
Rheumatics and neuralgics and gouty peo
ple sometimes improve here, if they are
lucky, and Gen. Hastings informs me that
it is the best place on earth for all people
trouble:! with insomnia and nervous diseases.
.But Bermuda is especially the spot for well
folks—for people who are hardy and delight
in charming scenery of every sort, or for
the overworked who wish to rest in the
bland smile of eternal summer. That’s the
kind of folks who should come to Bermuda.
Gain in Colored Formulation.
[Macon (Ga. I Telegraph.]
This is the way the increase of the negroes
is accounted for. A given number of whites
have six children born to them in a year, of
whom two die before reaching the age of
self-support The same number of negroes,
It is said, will have ten children born in a
year, and lose five before they reach the age
of self-support. The negroes thus lose two
and a half times as many children as the
whites, and yet gain upon them in the census
figures. _
Fads and London.
[Exchange.]
Professor de Chaumont remarked recently
that in London the streets were filthy and
the sewers abominable, but the houses were
the perfection of cleanliness; whereas in
Paris one might give a dinner party in the
sewers, and the streets were perfectly clean,
but the houses were abominably filthy.
> Yosemite Hotel.
The California legislature has passed a
bill appropriating $411,000 to build a hotel
for travelers in the Yosemite valiey.
Triumph of the Camera.
[Scientific Exchange.]
Some remarkable photographs of a
pistol bullet in its Hight, under the
illumination of an electric spark, have
been secured by Professor E. Mach of
Prague. He has also photographed the
air-streams which one may see over a
Bunsen burner placed in sunshine, and
has even obtained pictures of waves of
sound, these last being made visible by
a method in which ad vantage is taken
of Mie irregular refraction of light by
the waves set in vibration by sound.
Although these experiments may not
have any practical value, they are in
teresting as showing the great degree of
perfection to which the photographic
art has been carried.
An Electrical Umbrella.
[Exchange.]
A new contrivance is an electrical
umbrella which will bring a thief to a
realizing sense of his crime. When any
one but its owner opens it it explodes
with violence and suddenness. The
owner avoids an explosion by pressing t
spring in the handle.
A Popular Lunch.
Pigs’ feet are becoming very popular
in. New York for lunch People are
beginning to find that they are twice as
nutrituous as pies or tarts, don’t cost
any more, and can be eaten in the swine
time.
Codfish for the Pacific Coast.
[Chicago Tinies. ]
The Pacific coast people obtain their
supply of codfish from the Chaumogin
islands, nine schooners being about to
sail from San Francisco. The various
firms engaged in the trade have differ
ent places, known only to themselves,
to which they annually send their ves
sels, and the greatest care is taken to
keep the good fishing spots a secret for
their own benefit. On every voyage
each vessel locates the best fishing
grounds. In some years the fish are
abundant in one place, and, being mi
gratory, are scarce in the next year.
The fleet remains in Alaska waters from
two months and a half to three months,
visiting all the islands along the south
ern shore of Alaska. The men leave
the schooners in small boats, and fish
from 4 o’clock in the morning until 4
o’clock in the afternoon. The greatest
obstacle to cod-fishing is the dense, cold
fogs that during the season hang over
the island.
Vaseline in Pastry.
(Chicago Timos.]
French bakers arc making large use
®f vaseline in cake and other pastry.
Its advantageover lard or butter lies in
the fact that, however stale the pastry
may be, it will not become rancid. The
council of hygiene disapproves of the
practice, on the ground that the deriv
atives of petroleum contain no nutri
ment. It does not say directly, how
ever, that they are injurious to health.
Velocity of Sound.
Sound travels through the air at the
rate of 1,142 feet in a second, or a mile
in about four and two-third seconds.
Metal conducts sound at the rate of
11,865 feet per second.
The Crocodile’s Jaw.
Experiments made in Paris show that
the crocodile can bring its jaws together
with the force of over 300 pounds.

How an Atlanta Woman was
Made to See and Hear.
AN INTERESTING STORY.
Miss Minnie Walla-e resides with Mrs.
George Fickland, 41 McAfee street, Atlanta,
Ga., and from her own lips a Constitution re
porter learned the following story:
Several months ago she became almost to
tally blind and deaf, and could not tasje any
thing except salt. Her bones became the seat
ol Intense pain, her joints were swollen ana
painful, and eventually her whole body ana
limbs became covered with splotches and
small sores. Her appetite failed, and she
gradually lost flesh and strength, and had but
little use of herself, as her limbs and muscles
were paralyzed. She, as well as her friends
and those with whom she lived, despaired of
her recovey. Her sufferings, combined with
loss of hearing and taste, and blindness, were
truly heartrending. . 4 .
All treatment from physicians and the use
of medicines seemed powerless. Her dis
ease was blood poison and rheumatism.
As she now seemed well and hearty the re
porter asked what wrought such a wonderful
change. , _ ,
“I used a medicine recommended by a
friend,” she replied, “and before one battle
had been taken I began to see and hear. loe
second bottle relieved all rheumatic pains
and improved my appetite. When I had com
pleted the use of six bottles my eyesight and
hearing were fully restored, sense of taste re
turned, and splotches disappeared, sores all
healed, and my strength and flesh restored.
I now feel as well as I ever did, and my
friends, as well as myself, are astonished.
“What was the Medicine?” asked the re
porter. ~
“Botanic Blood Balm-B. B. B. was the
great remedy that acted so powerfully on my
disease and cured me. I never experienced
any unpleasant symptoms from its use. and
its action is so quick that it surprises all.’
The reporter then sought a physician who
knew the case, whereupon he handed us the
following lines:
“1 examined the above case of blood poison
and rheumatism, before and after being
cured, and certify to the main facts above
stated, and must acknowledge that the B. B.
B. effected a most wonderful cure in this
well-known case.
