THE FARMER—ONE OF
UNCLE SAM’S DEFENDANTS
By D. B. Osborne, Chairman Soil Improvement Committee, Atlanta, Ga.
V
,«t \ *Y’ i Upon you in
feisT” ]&•-' I placed the grave
-- , ’ - ... responsibility of
producing abund-
D. B. OSBORNE ant crops with
which to feed and clothe our army
and navy; the armies and navies of
our Allies—our own people at home
and the peoples of our Allies in Eu
rope.
Failure would bring disaster to our
army and an untimely and unneces
sary death to many of our boys who
have gone forth to battle in defense
of our liberty.
But, Mr. Farmer, we know that un
der the great responsibility placed
on you by our Government, that there
is no such word as "fail” In your vo
cabulary and that nothing short of in
surmountable providential causes could
prevent your answering fully to this
responsibility.
However, maximum crops can only
be had by the judicious and intensive
use of fertilizers, good seed, thorough
cultivation, and labor-saving machin
ery.

range at a bargain, see
Dowling & McXab.
One of your most pressing prob
lems and one to be acted upon without
delay, is the matter of obtaining your
fertilizer.
In spite of the best efforts of the
manufacturers and the Government,
materials for making fertilizers are
scarce and high In price. Therefore,
it is all the more necessary that what
fertilizers are to be distributed, should
be used upon soil that has received the
very best preparations the fanner is
capable of giving.
The mobilization of our army, re
quiring a maximum movement of
troop trains and supply trains, has ov
er-taxed the capacity of our railroads
as never before, and In order for fer
tilizers to be distributed this season,
the movement must of necessity, be
gin early and the unloading of cars
at destination be done with utmost
despatch. Every car must be loaded
to capacity.
Today fertilizers are cheaper than
farm crops or farm labor. A bale of
i cotton, a bushel of corn, oats or
wheat, will buy more pounds of fertil
izers now than ever before, hence to
assure the performance of a patriotic
duty, with great profit to yourself, or
| der your fertilizers promptly so that
j you may be sure to get them. And
j when you get them, use them with
1 the greatest degree of intelligence.
Satisfactory results are bound to foF

Farm Products Will Remain
High for Years to Come
.lust think of it:
Short cotton at 30c per pound, i
Long cotton at 75c ixt pound.
Dolton seed at $85.00 per ton. j
Peanuts at $125.00 per ton.
Corn at $c..00 bushel.
Live hogs at 18c per pound.
Syrup at SI.OO per gallon.
Why not buy a small farm in
South Georgia and work it your
self. One crop at half the prices
for the above products, will pay
for it.
Spend the winter clearing a few
acres. One man can clear one acre
a day, average new cut over land
along the A., B. & A. Railway.
South Georgia lands are cheap.
Now is the time to buy.

240 Pound Pigs
With corn above 50 cents hogs
eat their heads off very quickly.
The hog that takes two or three
months to get on full feed never
brings you a profit.
When you are ready to put your
shoats on feed, begin with the 15.
A. Thomas' Hog Medicine. Use
regularly and watch your shoats
round out into fat hogs in nine
months —liogs going well over 200
pounds and as high as 240 pounds
Figure the average feeding and you
will see why the 15. A. Thomas,
medicine is a good investment.
Try feeding out your hogs on this
plan and if you are not more than
pleased, we will refund the cost of
the medicine. Sold by the Pear
son Hardware Store.
