LAND UNRETIIKNED FOi) TAX.
Owners Must Gel Busy to Keep
It From Being Sold.
Mr. 11. \Y. Corbitt, Alkinsot.
county’s first Tax Receiver, wen
into office without experience, Imp
lie had a mind and a will to a<-
complish tin* task before him with
justice to t iie tax payers and honoi
to himself. The Tribune pays him
the deserved compliment that lie
has made good.
Mr. Corbitt Ins been diligent ii
his office; he had no recorded pri
ced cut by which to be guided
he followed the precedent, of ntak
ing three rounds of the county
and “passing the hat around.'
He decided he had done his whole
duty and turned bis big pile of
returns over to the board of equal
izers. These gentlemen performed
the duty assigned to them as best
they could. The digest was made
up and forwarded to the 'f ax Coni
missioner.
The Commissioner’s letter, ae
knowlcdging the receipt of the di
gest, had the effect of awaking
Mr. Corbitt from his siesta. “Is
$4.88 a fair average price of Atkin
son county laud for taxation!”
asked the commissioner with a re
quest for an early reply. Mr. Cor
bitt decided it was not and so
wrote the commissioner. But the
valuation had been settled for the
year 1919, and could not jie chang
ed until 1920.
Mr. Corbitt became dissatisfied
with his work and look a new
tack on it. lie has had a big map
of the county made, showing every
lot of land numbered. He then
took his returns and marked the
number of acres of each lot return
ed and by whom. In this way lie
has ascertained the number of
acres unreturned in each lot, which
makes an aggregate of twenty-seven
thousand acres, a matter of more
than SIOO,OOO in taxable resources.
This report was made to (he ordi
nary, Judge Roberts, who is having
same published below, as a notice
to the owners to come forward and
return same; otherwise it will, at
the proper time, be advertised as
unreturned property and sold for
its taxes.
Road the list carefully.
