Advertising does pay, and if yours doesn't, it doesn’t alter the fact. If yours doesn’t pay, you can safely seek the reason why in your own particu lar case. It’s either because your ad vertising isn’t done correctly or there la not enough of It, or It may be that your store and its methods are not what folks want. Indiscriminate eadvertislng might sometimes pay, but it wastes a lot of money. To qualify tnat statement and make it more nearly the truth, let us say that a merchant who advertises indiscriminately may have a paying business, and make somo of his adver tising pay, but he W'astes a lot of money upon advertising of a certain sort that can be dispensed with. There are lots of forms of so-called advertising that are absolutely worth less. Sorry, but there are scores of merchants who never advertise in any other. Let a scheme come along with a cheap thing and the slow merchant will take a space. Let a canvasser come along with a good thing, which necessarily costs more, and the mer chant doesn’t want it If he could have it at same prices as the worth less thing, well and good. Ho looks at just cost, not at results. It's not in advertising that folks lose money, but in the wrong form of It. The intelligent advertiser has long ago learned what mediums to use; what to allow to g> by. The man who doesn’t study advertising is usually the chap who "knows less" than when he started in. Advertising well done can't help bringing dividends. It has built up poor business; it will build up lots of others. Nobody has yet realized just how great advertising really is, but there are lots of men who know enough about it to Know how to in vest their money therein, with proflt. Know enuogh to avoid the pitfals. Know enough to steer a business to success, if that business deserves it. Let the man of faint heart be con vinced that advertising pays. Let him see, also, that if It isn’t paying there is a reason for it It's not so much nowadays with up to-date merchants whether advertising pays or doesn’t pay. What they a.e seeking everlastingly is to find which mediums pay best. That is the all important question to which their en deavors are bent And this fact ought to be made plain to him whi is in the dark, but who wishes to be brought into light by having and receiving a part of this great lever of business advertising. AMERICANS ARE HEALTHY. This country is more healthy with the exception of Norway and Sweden than any part of Europe, and the ef fect of the intense struggle for suc cess on the part of our business men and women is more than balanced by our higher standards of living, which tend to make our people continue along the path of Improvement. While It is impossible to arrive at final con clusions on the basis of our industrial or ordinary experiences, because of the careful medical selection exercised In insurance practice, the facts estab lished by other investigations indicate that the adult foreign born citizen is subject to a lower mortality in the United States than in his own coun try, and it may be safely assumed that any inherited tendency to early decay will be more than balanced by the healthier conditions of life in our country. A comparative mortal ity table shows that close behind Nor way, and ahead of Great Britain, France, Germany, and ahead of other states of our country, New Jersey has the lowest death rate. The chance of attaining the age of 100 in Massachu setts is today ten times what it was half, a century ago. Certainly the facts are abundant tending to prove that old age is being attained by men and women in this country with an in creasing degree of frequency, and, what is better, to quote the w'ords of authority: "It is certain that our American men at 60 are not broken up as badly as our fathers were at 40.’’ The Valdosta Times thinks that the courts of Georgia are getting into politics. With the judges elected by the people it would not be surprising if some of them got into politics. In fact, it would be very much of a sur prise if a judge who depended upon the people for his seat upon the bench did not take part in politics, more or less openly. About the only way to keep the courts out of politics would he to appoint the judges for life or during good behavior. As long as the people elect the judges they must not worry it the judges take to poli tics. The fullest official endorsement of Admiral Dewey’s report in the Schley court of inquiry has been given by the state senate of Mississippi, which has adopted a resolution declaring that no text hook shall be used in the public schools of that state “that gives to any other officer than Admi ral Schley credit for the victory off Santiago.’’ The election of u Republican con gressman from tho seventh district of New York is evidently due to Dem ocratic division and disaffection rath er than to any change in tho political majority of the district. The New York World says Presi dent Roosevelt is going to refer tho appeal of Admiral Schley to Attorney General Knox. You must pay for the News. We pay our bills and must collect our bills.
