NO TRUTH IN
RAILROAD RUMOR
REPORT THAT BRUNSWICK AND
BIRMINGHAM HAS BEEN
SOLD, IS DENIED.
President Machen Wires From New
York That Rumor is Without .
Foundation—Untrue.
Fitzgerald, Ga„ Jan. 14. —Rumor to
the effect that the Atlantic and Birm
ingham, formerly the Waycross Air
Line, had purchased the famous
Brunswick and Birmingham railroad,
is ail the talk here tonight. Vice-
President and General Manager Geo.
Dale Wadley and Goneral Freight
and Passenger Agent H. C. McFadden
of the Atlantic and Birmingham, are
here tonight and when, asked about
the deal informed your correspondent
that they knew nothing about it. It
is known here, however, that there
is some talk of the Atlantic and Birm
ingham building from a point on their
line at or near Beach, about twenty
miles from Waycross, in a direction
towards Brunswick, the objective
point, as rumor goes, making a con
nection with the Brunswick and Bir
mingham. Parties living near Beach
report a surveying corps leaving
Beach a few weeks ago in the direc
tion of Brunswick, which is supposed
to be a surveying party of the Atlantic
and Birmingham railroad. The At
lantic and Birmingham, with a force
of nearly 200 hands, is laying one
mile a day on their Cortlele exten
sion, and expect to be running trains
into that city March 1.
In regard to the above published
rumor, President Machen yesterday
wired the following from New York:
“Any rumor that our road has been
sold is without shadow of foundation.”
It is not understood here how such
a rumor gained currency, as those
who know anything at all about the
B. & B„ know absolutely that Presi
dent Machen is now in better snape
to carry out the proposed extension
to Birmingham than any one else
could be. and tt is only a question of a
lew days Before some very important
moves will be made along that line.
The B. & B. is fixed a.? a Brunswick
institution under the head of President
Machen.
The Big Minstrels.
There is a refreshing absence of
anything offensive ana an abundance
of wholesome fun in the performance
of Richards & Pringle s Mammoth
Minstrel Organization that will ap
pear at the Grand opera nouse, Tues
day, January 21. This big attraction
caters to the most refined patronage
and furnishes hours of solid enjoy
ment without a suggestive utterance
during the whole performance, and
this has been the phenomenal success
of this big combination.
Its forty performers are selected
from the best in the colored minstrel
line, and every act presented is bright,
brisk and original and sure to please
the most critical. This season's or
ganization is pronounced the strong
est and most satisfactory this enter
prising firm has ever put in the amuse
ment field.

FIGHTING FORFST FIRf
HE MY BHD.
IN ENDEAVORING TO SAVE HIS
WIFE, SHEPPARD BOYD
WAS BURNED.
Both His Hands Burned to the Bone
and the Flesh Cooked to a
Criepr-The Fire.
In a heroic and successful effort to
save his wife frpra destruction by
flames of the forest fires, Sheppard
Boyd, a well known and popular
young man near Brunswick, was ter
ribly burned yesterday, and may lose
the use of both hands and arms.
Boyd and his wife moved out to
Greenland, on the Brunswick and
Birmingham railroad, some weeks
agr, to live. The forest fires referred
to in these columns as raging yester
day began to draw near his home, and
Boyd and his wife went out to fight
the flames. It was while engaged in
this work that Mrs. Boyd's dress
caught fire and began to blaze. She
screamed, and her husband ran to her,
and with his bare hands sought to
oust the burning garments. He suc
ceeded, but at a fearful cost to him
self, as every vestige of skin has
peeled from both hands and the ourn
ing brands went deep into the flesh to
the bones.
He was hurriedly brought to Bruns
wick for treatment In toe afternoon
while suffering intensely, he was car
ried back home, where he could be
near his wife.
It is understood that his wife is
25 PER CENT OFF.
