Leaders of Low Prices SEE DUPLAY IN 1 HE WINDOW AND NOTICE PRICED TALKS OF RIFLEMEN COL. WYLLY SAYS THE BRUNS WICK COMPANY MUBT RE CRUIT UP NOW. Yesterday’s Savannah News says: Colonel T. S. Wylly, Jr., commanding the First Infantry, has commenced the new year by the adoption o£ a vigorous policy in dealing with delin quent companies. He has recommend ed to the Adjutant .General the dis bandment at once of the Kell Rifles of Statesboro, and that he Seriven Guards of Sylvania, be inspected with a view to their immediate disband ! ment <f found inefficient. Both these companies have been given ample opportunity for improvement, but the interest in Statesboro and Sylvania, ' where they are respectively located, ' seems dead. The company in Bruns wick is practically on probation, and unless its new captain, who is soon to be examined, succeeds in building it up, it, too, will be recommended for disbandment. The shaking up of the out of town companies of the First Regiment now promises to be general, and may re sult in the disbandment of companies besides those mentioned, unless the officers and members evince greater interest. Col. Wylly, no doubt, hates to cut down the strength of the regi ment, but seems to feel that the time of the state’s officers, and Us money and equipment, should not be expend ed upon any but effective companies. | Reportß from many Ol the compa nies throughout the state show this apathy, and it is not improbable that there would be a number of them dis banded were their regimental com manders to decide upon the same course as that which is to be followed by Col. Wylly. The weeding out of the companies in which no adequate Interest is manifested woud mean the Improvement of the others, for the reason that the fund received from the government and the state's ap propriation would be subjected to shorter division and would tend to the betterment of me troops. The time for the payment of state and county taxes for the year 1901 expired on December 19 last past, and according to law all taxes remain ing unpaid on that date must be placed in execution. I notice in the Atlanta Journal of Saturday last, where nearly 100 counties had made settlement. Now, in order that Glynn county may not he among the last to make settlement, and also, to assist those who have not yet paid, I will accept the tax due by them for 1901, up to and including Saturday, the 25th day of January, 1902, without demand ing the cost to which I am entitled under the law. LIQUOR LICENSE COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS THAT IT BE RAISED FROM S2OO TO S3OO A YEAR. The license committee submitted their report to council last night, and in it they recommended that the liquor license be raised from S2OO to S3OO per year. The ordinance was placed on its first reading. The action of the committee does not necessarily mean that the license will be raised and no fight will be made until it comes up for its sec ond, third and final reading next Thursday night The matter was to have been settled last night but ow ing to the absence of Alderman Kai ser, who is a member of the license committee, final action was postponed. The saloon men of the city are very anxious to know what will be the final result with reference to the li cense. They think, however, that the recommendation will be defeated when it comes before open council, as some of the aldermen are known to be in favor of leaving the license as it has been in the past The best photographs, crayons, photo jewelry, etc., are to be had at Wilson’s studio, 502 1-2 Gloucester street Call and see samples and the prices.
