NEW YORK FASHIONS,
AS VIEWED BY LAL.
(Special Correspondence.)
New York, Jan. 19.—For once Dame
Fashion has treated her followed
with a little grace, and the woman
of slender purse can adopt some or
the most favorable modes to her lim
ited outlay.
Every style of woman can choose
at least a becoming fashion, and the
tall, short, blonde, brunette and oth
erwise kind of woman, is easily gar
bed in becoming attire.
Furs were never richer nor so eas
ily avaiable to the slender purse, as
this year. To be strictly up to date
you must possess a fur collar or boa
with dangling tails numbering any
where from four to a dozen; the
muffs are much larger than last year,
and are also decorated with the tails
of the animals they are supposed to
represent.
Avery handsome set for an elderly
lady was made of black Persian
lamb, the collar placed on the shoul
ders, and a medici ruff finished the
neck; it reached nearly to the bottom
of the dress skirt, and at intervals
had clusters of little black tails, to
the number of six.
In hats, velvet turbans, really for
any mode of decoration you may pre
fer, are offered in the shop at very
reasonable prices. A beautiful one 1
saw was made entirely of the blue
black feathers of the Grebe.
Another was draped about the brim
with a scarf, and a largo butterfly
made of feathers was poised on the
crown.
The ever popular sailor hat Is
trimmed In a most fetching manner,
which makes it as delightful as an
old friend in an attractive form ever
is; a wreath of flowers laid around the
brim near the crown is a novelty, but
very becoming, and a large velvet
bow shaped like the Alsatian, and
placed almost on the crown in the
back, with the long ends tacked to
hide the joining of the wreath.
For very dressy wear, hats of all
white are very much worn; white
felt, vevet and corded silk, trimmed
elaborately with lace. fur. flowers and
even small fruits, make a wide field
of choice for the modish woman.
In coats and wraps, some of the
styles would make Venus herself look
like a feather pillow, from a rear
view; the so-called raglans are as
shapely and graceful as the average
home-made Mother Hubbard wrapper.
The half-fitting long coats are very
warm looking, but very few women
look well in a long garment, and the
short jacket, the three-quarter length,
and the round Eton, which reaches
the waist line, will doubtless stay
with us longer than the Kaglan.
Never were the fashions for children
so sensible, uor the designs so becom
ing as this year.
The Russian styles for little boys
and girls are very popular.
Reds, browns, greens, grays and
blues in serges, cheviots, corduroy,
and velvet make a list for serviceable
and dressy wear
The coats for little boys are mostly
in the Russian style double-breasted
and buttoned diagonally from the
shoulder; a belt of leather or white
kid gives a pretty finisli.
The old-time broad-brimmed black
hat is in favor again; simply trim
med with a sash like ribbon, tied sim
ply at the back in a huge bow, with
long, streaming ends; it is a very
stylish yet simple mode for little girls.
The very latest fad for children is
to cast aside the black stockings, so
long in favor, and to encase the
sturdy little legs in stockings of pure
white, either of wool or heavily ribbed
cotton; with a dainty patent leather
and kid boot; the effect is very ehie.
The Kate Greenaway poke bonnet
of velvet, with a deep facing inside
the ruff of high colored silk, edged
with narrow bands of fur, is one of
the most popular head dresses for
little girls of from three to nine years.
The shops are just displaying their
spring goods, and of those I will tell
you next week. m.
