We are delighted to road that Miss
Stone Is alive again,
The Panama end of the lobby seems
to be In the lead.
The Augusta Herald says is hog
kiiiing time In Georgia.
Dr. Parkhurst Is pounding the Low
administration. He must have his fun.
We must have more school room.
Our children must be educated.
Those folk In Panama did have a
genuine light after all.
It looks like Whitelaw Reid has a
cinch on special embassy business.
It Is said that Terrell will announce
tomorrow. Don i make It too long,
Joe.
The Selma Times thinks someone
should search out a remedy for the
•‘growing dishonesty in mankind.”
The Washington Reporter says pro
hibition never did, and never will pro
hibit.
Admiral Schley will make his first
public address since the courtmartlal
before the Hamilton Club In Chicago
•next Saturday.
Perry Belmont spent eighty thous
and in his recent race for congress. He
is minus the seat In congress as well
as the money.
Boykin Wright, who, it is said, will
succeed Joe Terrell as attorney-gen
eral, has done the democratic party
of Georgia able service.
When it comes to wounds the
Wightsvllle Record thinks that “a
tongue may Inflict a deeper wound
than a sword.”
The Atlanta Journal says: A North
Carolina man aged SS eloped the other
day with a woman aged §2. Their
great-grandchildren objected to the
match.
Acording to the statisticians who
keep the run of crime from year to
year there were 118 legal executions
in the United States in 1901. Of the
persons who suffered death seventy
one were negroes and forty-seven
white.
THEIR OWN MEDICINE.
It will be remembered that J. H. De
vereaux, colored, was collector or cus- j
toms in Brunswick some years ago.
He got the office by the strong endorse
ments given him by theousineßS men
of Savannah. He then was Successful
In getting another large number of en
dorsements for the Brunswick job from
citizens of the Forest City. In the
meantime Devereaux thought he would
rather be collector at Savannah and
won out on the savannah endorse
ments.
It was a real good joke on our sister
city, and promises to be a very serious
one in as much as Devereaux is go
ing to land again by those same en
dorsements and the fact that he has
been made a colonel by the Georgia
legislature.
This is certainly a case of Savan
nah taking a dose of her own medicine.
THE RIVAL OF THE KLONDIKE, j
If the reports of the explorers of Ec
uador are to be relied upon that coun
try will soon supercede in popular fa
vor Australia, California and even the
Kiondike, as a place offering superb
advantages for tne rapid accumulation
of a fortune.
A. C. McKenzie, who has just made
a horseback journey ot three thousand
miles through Ecuador declares thai
what he saw leads him to think that
"Ecuador possesses wealth that, would
startle the average American, and it is
only waiting for vigorous Americans to
get it out. The United States is sup
plying the mining machinery, and will
get the trade. Ecuador will he one of
the greatest gold and silver producing
countries of the world.”
American energy has already done
for Ecuador what European capitalists
gave up attempting to accomplish, and
that is building a railroad presenting
apparently insurmountable engineering
difficulties. Even with the facilities ot
the railroad, however, and the glitter
ing prognostication of the explorer, It
would be just as well for gold seekers
to earu something more of the country
before making a nazard of new for
tunes there, tor railroads are not al
ways the sure indication of prosperity,
and the views of explorers are always
roseate and exaggeratlngly partial. <|
"I would not advise any man to mar
ry a woman who had been to cooking
school,” said the Rev. Dr. Robert Hag
nail in a speech before tho Working
Women's Protective Union in Now
York the other evening. Dr. Bagnall’s
idea is that any woman who needs to
go to cooking school has missed the
home training and influences that a
wife should have.
Devereaux was made the collector
at Savannah through Savannah en
dorsements given him for the Bruns
wick colleetorship. He is likely to bo
re-appointed through an unusual en
dorsement given him by the Georgia
legislature. Devereaux is colored, but
be is a good man.
At the rate with which veterans
of the Spanish war are flocking to the
pension agents, and that puchase of
the Philippines, the American people
will hesitate a long time before they
engage in another war.
The Greenes and Gaynors will be
brought to Georgia Monday for trial,
according to a courtmartlal issued in
New York. The case has been hang
ing on the bush of justice for a long
time, but is still "green."
Prince Henry will have American
society at his feet. Disgusting, but we
will have to stand for it.
