Of all the inauy movements "looking to the betterment and progression of our country, not one is more important or more deserving the fostering care of our people than that which looks to the improvement of our common ways, the veins of the commonwealth, ju which the railroads may be said, to represent the arteries. In order that our favored land may reap the full benefits which arise from its locations, climate, soil and diversified production, we must have better roads. The rail roads have dene much—will do more hut at the best they are dependent upon the common highways for their traffic, In the next decade it is probable that railway building in the South will have a great impetus, but there are thousands of thriving communities that will still have to wait upon the \yagou for their transportation. The Southern States are rich in good madiuakiug material of one kind or another. Scarcely a county that has not a supply of lime, stone, chert, quarts or gravel that will make good rend metal. The root of the problem lies in so instructing the mass es of the people that they will appreciate the value of and really desire good roads To this end the initial steps will be taken by the larger and wealthier com munities, and the roads gradually ex tended into the back districts. Once begun, tbs movemeut will not be aban doned. There is no lesson so effective as the object lesson. The calculation has often been made that the wear and tear on wagons, stock, harness, waste of time with man and beast, would, if capitalized, pay for the roads, but it is difficult to induce the average taxpayer to see it that way. The old system of roadmaking, which obtains throughout the Southern States, is a farce of period ical recurrence, With the first heavy rain all the alleged ’.work" disappears. It is to meet these conditions and change them teht good reads conventions are held and attended by the most enlighten ed and progressive of the citizenry, regardless of occupation ;for the question of roads affects every occupation. The next convention is booked for Charleston, 8. C., on the sth. 6th and 7th of Feb ruary, proximo. SHIP NOTICE.
