The Way-cross Herald says: It
seems to be fully understood that Hon.
W T . G. Brantley- will have no opposition
for re-election In the Eleventh district
from his own party. This is as it
should be. If the republicans how
ever desire to bring out a candidate,
they have our permission to do so.
In fact we prefer that Mr, Brantley

THE SOUTH’S. PROGRESS.
In the Baltimore Sun or the noth,
appears an article by It. H. Edmonds,
editor of the Manufacturers Record.
In which Is sot out the progress made
by the South in manufacturing lines
within he past ten years.
In iron and steel the showing Is won
derful, and perhaps not less so in
cotton.
Beginning twenty years ago, with
little capital, a population technical
ly ignornt of manufacturers, the South
has made such progress as warrants
the writer In the conclusion that its fu
ture haß a capacity of ten thousand
millions of output.
Whether this is over sanguine an es
timate here is nothing more sure than
that the South has the natural cap
acity to equal any section of the coun
try In manufactured product.
This fact is becoming widely known.
THE FILIPINOS.
Governor Taft says the mass of the
people of the Philippines are densely
ignorant and utterly under the con
trol of the educated class. They
have no conception of life without
bossism; true Independence is an Idea
which they have not yet been able to
grasp. The peopm of one province
no more understand the language
spoken in any other province than
they do English.
This is the people on whom the
United States is seeking to impose
civil government and to whom It is
proposed to grant, autonomy. Gover
nor Taft acknowledges that the only
hope of reaching the majority of the
people is through the educated c lasses.
When to- those facts is added the
other, now well proved, that the aver
age educated Filipino is a lying rascai
taking the oath of allegiance and ac- j
cepting ofilce at the hands of the
Americans only that no may ho more
effectively serv the insurrection
a good idea may be gained of the
situation which is costing the govern
ment about 19,000,000 a year and the
lives of many goou soldiers.
With a peopple so treacherous and
so femd of the bushwhacking they call
warfare, there seems little hope that
the Philippines will ever be tranquil.
This country has simply bought a
group of islands which will be a
relation to It far less quiet than that
which Ireland bears to England.
The people of Florida are still call
ing on Editor Wallace F. Stovall,
of that excellent Tampa Tribune, to
enter the race for gubernatorial hon
ors. The success that no has made
of the Tribune is the best evidence
of what he would do as chief execu
tive of the state. But this popular
young Floridian says he would rather
be editor of the Tampa Tribune than
governor of Florida, and we agree
with him in the choice. The press
could not effort to lose such a valua
ble member of the fraternity.
This city will be well represented
in Charleston on "Brunswick Day.
