the waves of the Atlantic with her

declined the honorary degree of I>. D.
proffered by some college on the ground
that he didn’t need it, as the people had
already dubbed him doctor. So with
Schley. No matter what the findings of
the court of inquiry were or wliat Pres
ident Roosevelt may do with his appeal
the great body of the people know that
Schley gained the battle of Santiago,
and they have acclaimed him a hero.
The people in the long run can always
be trusted to he just and wise. They
have given him a place with l.onl Nel
son, with John Paul Jones, with Perry,
with Furragut and with Dewey.
Schley's is “one of the few, the immor
tal names that were not born to die.”
Treason.
Mr. Roberts, Republican congress
man from Massachusetts, has rendered
himself liable to prosecution, if not for
treason or misprision of treason, at
least for ieze majesty. In a recent in
terview lie so far forgot what is due to
such eminent Republican savants as
Hon. Sereno E. Payne, lion. John l)al
zoll, Hon. George W. Steele and Gen
eral Charles Henry Grosvenor as to
say, ‘‘l am a protectionist, and 1 be
lieve in the principles of protection,
and 1 think the tariff should be revised
by Republics us and not by Demo
crats." Men will rub their eyes and
pinch themselves when they read that
to discover if they are awake, for lias
not the Hon. Sereno K. Payne put his
veto on any change whatsoever in our
tariff schedules? Has not Brother Dal
zell repeatedly intimated that the Ding
ley hill is tile source from which all
blessings Bow? Has not Governor
Steele taken a mighty oath that there
shall he no tariff tinkering? Did not
General Grosvenor asseverate just aft
er fhe Ohio election that, the American
people had no more idea of changing
the Dingley rates than tlicj had of re
modeling the Ten Commandments?
Now, in the face of all this, comes
Brother Roberts of Massachusetts with
a proposition that the HcpuhlU ans
shall revise the tariff, and wherefore?
Mirahile dictu, lo keep the Democrats
from doing it. His words imply two
things which must cause the cold chills
to chase each other up mid down ihe
spinal columns of the Republicans- (D
that the tariff needs revision: iki that
there is a chance for the Democrats to
win the elections and return to power.
Does Mr. Roberts Know what happens
to Republican reformers? lias lie eon
sklered the pitiable condition of Re
former Babcock? Mr. Roberts bad bet
ter loot; a little out.
False Prophets.
When the Republicans passed their
financial law in HMIO by which it was
intended to multiply national banks,
we were repeatedly and confidently
told that there would he no more trou
ble about the volume of the currency.
Now the treasury officials tell us that
the volume of the currency is being re
duced us rapidly as the law permits,
the maximum reduction und< r the stat
ute being .$.'1,000.0(11) per month. This
limit bits been reached for Iteeember
and January, with enough applications
pending to reach the limit in February,
it really lo iks as if there would be a
general rush to cancel bank noti
thereby reducing the currency t > the
panic point if it were not for the maxi
mum limit of $3,000,000 per month.
Truly the Republicans of 1000 were a
set of false prophets.
By highest authority we are com
matided to remove (lie beam frent our
cvri optics before we perform a surgi
cal operation on our brother to remove
the mote front bis eye. This advice is
peculiarly applicable to the Republic
ans at the present time. They are al
ways prating about differences among
Democrats, utterly regardless of disa
greement among Republicans.
It is my pleasant duty to jog their
memories as to how certain Republic
ans regard certain other Republicans.
For instance, the Philadelphia Bulletin
(Republican) remarks rather vigorous
ly as follows: “The smooth w iking of
the Republican machine in the house
may tickle the fancy of Republican
leaders, but it obviously is not calculat
ed to develop sound thinking or practi
cal statesmanship on the purl of repre
sentatives.” Which is both severe and
true.
