Show us a factory town and we will wager that it la prosperous. It is tbout time to drop the Tillman- Mcl.aurln scrap. No doubt about yesterday being March 1. Hill collectors and a high wind. If a public office is a public servant, a great many really want to lie ser vants. The Charleston esposdtion seems to he having more than Its share of hflrfi luck: A western scientist says tthe world will come to an end’ln 2004. This should not worry us. lietwwen Roosevelt and Tillman, P Is a case of the ‘‘devil and the deep”—Take your choice. Booker Washington ipis lost his pull with the newspapers. One of his recent speeches got only ten lines. The Mllledgevillc Union-Recorder says "it will deal fairly with all the candidates for governor. They are capable men and worthy Democrats aim we expect to support the nominee with out eating crow." The New’ Tork Press prints a sure and simple test of age in an egg. "ITTbBoIvo six ounces of common kitchen salt in a large glassful of wa ter and drop in your eggs, one at a time. An egg one day old will sink to the bottom. If three days old i( sinks just only below the surface. If live days and over it floats, and the older it is the more it protudes from the water. Many estimable persons have no doubt been grieved to learn that Prince Hency, who, during the voyage of the Kronprinz, was so gracious, so democratic, and so generally well be haved actually allowed himself to soon smoking a pipe, thus proving to the anti-tobacconists that he is ready to place His own imaginary comfort above the welfare of milliins of young Americans who may be tempted to follow his august exampte.—Macon Telegraph. Helen Keller the remarkable deaf, dumb and blind girl, who has not only learned to talk, but enjoys every priv ilege of those who hear and see. has Just finished writing with her own hands the story of her remarkable life. In this she describes her first awaken ing to the realization of life and the tvorld, and all that both contain; her first impressions and feelings and emotions, and the first rays of under standing that came to her. From that point she tells of the unfolding of her mental and physical powers how she learned to think and act, how she received instruction, and finally became capable of acquiring an edu cation which places tier among the bdst aduoated women of her age in the world today. THE INSURANCE RATES. The advance recently made by in surance companies in the rates of in surance is by no means surprising, Perhaps never in the history of this country have there been so great a number of large and destructive fires as have occurred during the past twelve months. Tne cities of the country report almost daily disas trous conflagrations and the loss of both life and property is very large. In this connection it is noticeable that many of the buildings destroyed are those that have been considered fire proof. It now seems that few of the modern proof buildings are really proof against fire. Asa matter of course a great .leal of tiie property destroyed by these conflagrations was covered ny insur ance, and the Insurance com panics have met their obligations in the mat ter promptly, but tins? fact does not save tiie value of the property to the country as a whole. While the own ers of the property have been re-im bursed by the insurance companies tiie values have been utterly and completely destroyed and lost to th“ general bum of the wealth of the country. Therefore it is not at all surprising that the insurance companies should inaugurate a scheme, the effect of which will cause greater diligence to be exercised on the part of the prop erty owners to prevent tin* destruc tion of thir property by fire. An in crease in the rates of insurance will have this effect. It will not only cause greater care to be exercised, but it will cause those who erect buildings in future to endeavor to have them as nearly lire proof as possible. Tne frequent reoccurrence of such de structive conflagrations as have vis ited various cities recently is appall ing. The value of the property de stroyed lias not only been very heavy going uii into the millions, but the loss of life has been unußunSy large. It Is to be hoped that the recent movement by the insurance compa nies will have the desired effect, for it, will serve as a protection not only to property, but to life as well. Ihe magnificent treatment Prince Henry is receiving at the hands of the American people is calculated to tempt other scions of the royal houses of tu old world to pay us a visit.
