The Quitman Free Press says: "The prevailing remedies for the grip seem to be quinine and whiskey, coal oti and whiskey, mutton suet and whiskey, mustard and whiskey, and whiskey." The Charleston News and Courier intimates that President Roosevelt may be in contempt in Edenfleld, wheiv} Jim Tillman lives, hut is not in contempt in Charleston, where the exposition is in full swing, The South Carotlna senators have been censured, and the incident is officially efosed. WILSON ON SOUTHERN FARMING Secretary Wilson of the United States Department of Agriculture, in a survey of agricultural progress In live south in the Twentieth Anniver sary number of the Manufacturers Record, of Baltimore, urges a great er average yield per acre than a greater acreage of cotton, the return, as far as possible, to the soil of the fertilizing ingredients of cottonseed, and greater attention to live stock industry, and he adds: "I heli.ve that the South will not much longer be. known and thought of primarily as the laud o' cotton, but as a great and prosperous region of varied agricultural industries. With the great industrial progress oi the southern stales and the develop ment of thbir wonderful mineral and manufacturing resources comes the best of alt markets for the farmer— the great home market. More am'- more I hope to see the agriculture of tue south diversified as this great home market expands. "Let the cotton crop continue to increase iu total production, but le its growth be rather by a higher average per acre than by a very large extension o the area upon this crop, l.et southern farmers keep the plant food at home and send the products of toe farm to market in the form of manufactured articles (manufactured on the farm by na tures processes) rather than in the form of raw material. Let them grade up Ihclr flocka and herds am keep many more of all kinds of do mestic animals. Let them renovat the soli by the use of legumes, an save flffl the fertilizing material tha the farm itself produces. ' .non will the agriculture ot lac south show in the census to be taken in 15 10 advances greater by far than even (7ie great progress made in the last twenty years of her history."
