DON’T KNOW.
Editor News: Will you kindly in
form me why Representative Symons
did not introduce a bill abolishing the
city court, or why he took no stops
whatever in uie matter?
Subscriber.
Really this is a question we are un
able to answer and “subscriber”
would no doubt fare better by ques
tioning Alt. Symons.
The News, however, does think the
matter requires some sort of an ex
planation, inasmuch as Mr. Symons
himself was foreman of one of the
grand juries which asked that the
court he abolished, and as a member
of that body was required to affix his
signature to the presentiments, thus
signifying his approval and endorse
ment of the document as a whole.
A FOOLISH PROPOSITION.
The suggestion made some days ago
published in these columns which
Hays:
A plan is now on foot by a num
er of leading attorneys of the Bruns
wick circuit to have Judge Bonnet’s
successor named by the lawyers of
the Brunswick circuit, and it is un
derstood that tile idea is meeting
with favor among the lawyers gen
erlly, and the candidates as well.
The plan is to have a meeting
somewhere in the district at which
ail lawyers will meet and nominate
a judge. If it is impossible for any
to attend they will ho allowed to
neml a proxy. The candidate receiv
ing the lowest number of votes on
the first ballot will drop out, and so
on until only one man is left, who
will be tne nominee.
The plan seems to he a good one,
inasmuch as the lawyers will have
the opportunity to name the judge.
“Now we like to know if the tax
payers of the Brunswick circuit are
going to sit by and let the lawyers
name our judge?
Are tile voters crazy?
No, the successor of Judge Bonnot
must be elected BY THE PEOPLE.
THE DUTY OF DEMOCRATS.
On being asked when he considered
a democrats presidential possibility.
Mr. Bryan is quoted as having said:
"No one can tell in advance what
the issues will be or what will be
their relative importance. It ought
to be sate to predict that democrat
ic principles will be applied to the is
sues. and it ought to be that the plat
form should Ire written by those whose
fidelity to those principles is not sub
ject to suspicion."
While he avoids the main question,
Mr. Bryan states a potent truth
when he says that democratic prin
ciples should lie applied to the is
sues. and also that the platform
should be written by those whose fidel
ity to those principles is not subject
to suspicion. The fact that this rule
has not been applied in the past is
no doubt the cause of the present
predicaments in which the party finds
itself. There is now' and has been
for several years past a very wide
difference of opinion among demo
crafs as to what really constitutes
democratic principles, and Mr. Bryan
has contributed about as much to the
causes which led up to these differ
ences as any one.
Wuen the time comes it may be a
difficult matter to find platform
writers whose fidelity will not be
questioned by some, but if the party
ever hopes to win another victory,
all democrats should forget their
past differences, recognize that grave
problems confront them, and get to
gether before another presidential
campaign is on.
Mr. Bryan and those who thought
as he did had full swing during the
last two campaigns, and should be
willing by this time to let those who
entertain different views from them
write the next platform. The repub
lican party presents many vulnerable
prints now, and if the democrats go
before the people on a platform em
bracing the strong principles of gen
uine democracy and showing up the
weak points of their enemy, they will
stand an excellent chance to win in
the next great national campaign.
Getting worse —the magazines are
handling the Tillman-McLaurin scrap.
We are glad to say that Governor
Candler has almost entirely rer-orv
ared from k's recent illness.
