In those days of steal and steam li Is generally assumed, says an ex change, that the sailing vessel has boon driven from the seas. Hut sail power is so much cheaper than steam, that such is not the case, for although the- picturesque old wood ed ships with their bluff hows and towiaring heights of canvas have dis appeared, their place lias been taken by long, slim, ungraceful schooners, since the fore and aft form of rig ging is the cheapest way of handling sails. In the olden times, even the line of-battle ships lind no more than three masts, while schooners were fitted with hut two, hut these modern schooners are enormous affairs, of 4.000 or 5,000 onn with four, live and even six masts. And with all the pother that is being made over ship subsidy, it may surprise a good many to learn that a large number in (he Atlantic coastwise trade, and of those big schooners ain employed that the lleet. is being steadily in creased every year And as no alien register can take part in tills partic ular trade, they are all American. Not only have they their chosen field to themselves, but if high freight rates make it worth their while, they ean at any time make a trip across the Atlantic, ami hence it Is not sur prising to learn that they pay hand some dividends and are thereby at tracting more and more capital into the business. The success of these vessels, therefore, would seem to in dicate that the best, way to obtain a mechant mariene is to build It. Prior to the Civil War the United States had more than their fair share of the carrying trade of the world. That stride banish.vl the merchant flag from the ocean, and it naturally will take a long time to recover the lost ground—no, water—especially as in tne meantime German yj lias so Weenly entered the lists as a com petttort nnrtlmt it will eventually he regained, is being regained year by year; is only on a line with oni achievement in every other industry, and that. too. without any subsidiz ing of the big steamship companies. If the size of the schooners and fha number of masts allotted to each is to continue increasing, however, one wonders to what we shall ulti mately come. The big coast schooner or the future will resemble a Mar coni, wireless telegraph station com ing end oil. j SPEAK OUT. The temperance people are crowd ing Mr. Terrell with questions and seem to be somewhat afraid to give definite answers. We aw not urging Mr. Terrell to hold out a red flag in front of a vicious cow. but he should not dodge these people in any manner, shape or form. Let them understand that that cannot Tlllmanize Georgia, and their question firing will cease““But the element behind Mr. Guerry believe, as their candidate does, in talking. It is their platform. The Jacksonville Times-Union and Citizen is evidently against the dis pensary for that state.
