Hon. Emory Speer has designated
the Brunswick Daily News as the
official organ of the United States
Court, in bankruptcy proceedings, for
Glynn county.
PUBLISHERS NOTICE.
The News Publishing Company de
sires it to be distinctly understood that
all legal advertisements must lie paid
iOr in advance. We cannot afford to
devote our space to such advertise
ments and wait on the courts for the
money.
You can now "hack up” to a little
hock licer.
Public sentiment Is strong against,
the city court. That alone is enough
to abolish it.
The superior court and a county
court will work a great deal hotter
In Glynn county. Let's have It.
Wonder will the day ever come
when there wltl he any millionaire
editors in this part of the country.
Senator Clark is said to lie unhappy
because he lias so much money. Evi
dently he does not greatly desire
happiness.
llrunswicUians are taking but little
Interest in the ■ gubernatorial race so
far. We have some troubles of our
own.
Four-lilllis of tie- tax payers of
Glynn county are In favor of the abo
lition of the city court. The major
ity will rule in this case as in all oth
ers.
The editor that predicted that the
governorship race was between Estill
and Terrell should get a job as a
weather prophet. He would lilt it
every time.
The Eleventh district lias in Con
gressman Brantley one of the best
representatives in the house, and the
people of the district will send him to
Washington just as long as he desires
to go.
POOR LITTLE CUBA.
Tlie Republicans were very prompt
yesterday In voting down the resolu
lion to Investigate, under congression
al direction, the charges that the
sugar trust is putting up all sorts of
money to promote the interests of
( tthan reciprocity. The resolution
was defeated by a strict party vote,
and no investigation will bo had. Per
haps tins Is wen. because of the
lari that an investigation would have
done no good. An investigation com
mittee to handle such a subject as this
would ho packed to begin with, and
a whitewash would result. However,
every newspaper editor in the conn
tiy knows that Cuba is sandwiched
between two selfish grindstones, and
between the two the island will lie
ground to deatli, it is a fight between
beet sugar and the other kind. Thou
sands of dollars have been spent by
both interests in an attempt to infln
enee legislation. Every editor of a
daily newspaper has received stacks
of ready written editorials through
the mans on each side of the qU es ,
tion, and during the fight Cuba has
boon lost sight of entirely. Money
lias doubtless been used in congress,
i’ud some newspapers have possibly
received rich subsidies for their influ
etUA it was the intention of the
author of the resolution introduced
in congress yesterday, but voted down
by the republicans, to uncover these
tilings, and if the right sort of com
mittee eouid be secured something
•would come 'of an investigation.
Since it would be a physcal Impossi
bility to secure such a committee
nothing has been lost by the defeat
of the resolution. The activity dis
played by Leader Payne, however, in
his successful attempt to throttle the
resolution, shows how closely the re
publicans are watching the loopholes
to prevent the escape of any mice from
the meal barrel. A hungry cat never
watched a rat hole more closely than
tne republicans in congress are guard
ing this Cuban mess. They know
i that if it is stirreJ the country will
be nauseated.
A SQUANDERED INHERITANCE.
A strange bit of money reached
the hands of a conductor on the At
lantic Coast Line Railway the other
day.
It was a prosperous looking five
dollar bill, a little the worse for
wear, and across its face was writ
ten :
"Last of a 250,000 inheritance.
Wine, Women and cards caused It
all."
How easy it is for a man to dump
ills failures onto other shoulders, t,o
mistake moral weakness for evident
misfortune.
Wine and women of the kind that
are generally associated with reck
less drinking and riotous living, and
cards can do every little harm in this
world alone.
There always has to be a fool to
be plucked: a plunger, who lacks the
sand and courage to live right; an
individual who pays a high price for
sorry pleasure.
The text on the flve-dollar bill does
not inspire much sympathy.
The man who can hum $60,000 in
self-gratlrtcation is selfish, Ignorant,
unfair to himself and to those who
are dependent on him, and has wasted
not only dollars, but days and nights
and weeks and months and a chance
to be useful and honorable and de
cent.
Don’t waste a heart throb on the
man who wrote that farewell to his
fortune.
Rather should have written:
“Last of a 2->O,OOO Inheritance, wast
ed by one who would not withstand
temptation, and who lacked the cour
age to be a man.”
