The chief desire of Congressman Crumpaeker, of Indiana, seems to be to do something in opposition to the welfare and progress of the south. It appears from a glance at his career that he permits no opportunity to pass without making an effort in this direction. Two notable instances of this; One is his untiring and unceas ing effort to cause a reduction of congressional representation in the south The other is his effor the other day to strike out the appropriation for the promotion of fast mail facilities in the south. It seems that he is in every way possible opposed to any thing that would be beneficial to the southern states. Whether this position suits his Indiana constituency or not is a question, but it is presumed that it does, or they would either call a halt or elect someone else in his place. This places the Hoosier state in a rather unenviable position. The United States is now one country, tinder one Hag, and Gie south is as much a part of it as any section, and no state or its representatives Should be permitted to continually stab it. The Birmingham Age- Herald offers a suggestion which, while somewhat extreme, would doubtless nave the desired effect, this paper says it becomes a cju. s tion of whether the south should continue to buy Indiana hay, corn, Hour and the like and it openly ad vocates a boycott along this line. Jo stand still and be struck at by the Crumpackers of Indiana, and not strike back," says the Age- Herald, "would be cowardly, and concerted action on the part of the central south would soon bring Indiana tanners to a sense of justice and patriotism. A few leaders of sucli movements are needed. Let In diaim be commercially tabooed in the central south until she unloads her Crumpackers. Alabama and Teu nesso can accomplish the task very speedily and effectually, for Indiana sells large quantities ot food products m I lie.se two states.” Bo far Mr. Crumpackei s efforts have been failures. His move against Ho. southern last mail was signally *o as it should have been. A prompt ami oflicieiit mail service from northern and eastern cities to the south is well ikl. itnlispeusibie for the transaction of the vast amount of business ho tween the two sections, and- sens ibie men in the north and east, as well iw i„ the south, realize this too well t„ ever allow the efforts of the Crunipackrs to interfere with it.
