I 'TWAS BENEFICIAL. There are a great many people who do not think that tne war with Spain was a righteous one by any means, but the war has been beneficial to the United States in more ways than one. In one respect it has been a godsend to the southern states, Since the Amer icans have been In Cuba, they have cleared up Havana and other points in Cuba, and there is no danger from yellow fever. The mayor of Havana has recently made an interesting re port., in which the following passage occurs: "The army tooa charge of the health department of Havana when deaths were occurring at tho rate of 21,525 per annum. It gives it up with deaths 1 occurring at the rate of 5,720 per year, it took charge with smallpox epidemic for years. It gives it up with not a single case having occurred in the city for over eighteen months. It took charged with yellow fever epidemic tor i two centuries, the relentless foe of every foreigner who came within Ha vana's borders—which he could not escape, and from whose attack he well knew that every fourth man must die. It found Havana feared as a thing un clean by all her neighbors of the Unit ed States and proclaimed against as too dangerous to touch, or even to come near anything that she had touched, to mo untold financial loss of both Havana and the United States. It leaves, after careful study of yellow fever by its officers unerstood by per sonal risk- for several of the investi gators have died of the disease, con tracted at their work. It lias estab lished the fact that yellow fever is only transmitted by a certain species of mosquito, a discovery that in its pow r tor saving human life, is only ex eellei. oy Jenner's great discovery, and as time goes on, it will stand in the sanio class as that great boon t.o mankind.” | I SHOULD BE PROV iuED FOR. j That is a sad tale which comes from | Gape Cod of the drowning of seven life-savers while in the discharge of t their duty. In the obscure places of life are men as brave as ever buckled i sword, and these protectors of human life along the coast aro the stuff of which heroes are made. We are told , that there Is no government pension for the wives and children left help less by the tragedy, ims is without excuse, for these brave fellows are i facing dangers during every storm ( from which many a. soldier would shrink. They should be able to feel that as a reward for their services this humane government will provide for those who may thus suffer.
