WORKING FOR BRUNSWICK.
A WMhlngt m s.ireial in the Savaii
lia’i Morning N ws of yesterday mad
ns follows:
"Sella,or Clay will ask lire Com
mi in: commute,' to add to the river
ni: I harbor bill as reported liorn the
lmus ■ an appropriation of sls .lion for
improvin . the inuid water route be
tween Savannah and Eetnandina, to
Increase the appropriation for the
Brunswick harnor from $1 . ,000 to
$105,000, to increase the item fox the
Oeoniu from SIO,OOO to $40,000; to
Increase that for the Cossa trom $25,-
000 to SIOO,OOO, ami an appropriation
for a survey for connecting Club and
Plantation creek.; so as to provide for
an inside water route from the A1
tamaha to Brunswick.
"The Senate committee has < >m
inrticod oouuldci ation <*f t ~ bill, but
amendments will not he reached for
several days.
"Senator Bacon reached the city this
morning and was in his place in the
senate chamber, when that body con
veiled. He lias been to Macon, on bus
iness for a few days."
If Senator Clay succeeds Irt indue
ing the commerce committee to make
those additions to the river and harbor
bill he will have rendered a valuable
service to his constituency in general
and those of Brunswick and wire
grass Georgia in particular.
The Increase of the appropriation
for the Brunswick harbor from S l i *
UOO to $165,000, will mean much for
this port, am! will Insure considerable
more work, and if the appropriation
is made for a survey, looking to the
connection of CUthli and Plantation
creeks, an.l thus providing an inside
water route front Altamaha river
points to Brunswick it will virtually
mean another water connection for
this city, with a larger tributary ter
ritory. and will make Brunswick tire
logical distributing point, for all sec
lions of me Altamaha river.
Brunswick's borad of trade might
take this matter up with Senator Clay,
aud Congressman Brantley, and in
some way be of service, itr furnishing
data, that these gentlemen may he en
abler! to properly bring the matter to
the attention or the commerce com
mittee of trie senate.
THE PASSING OF CECIL RHODES.
The death of Cecil Rhodes, removes
one of the most unique figures the
world has ever seen.
He was one of the most prominent
men itr South Africa, was at one time
premier, afterwards holding many po
sitions of honor and trust. He was
the principal owner of the Kimberly
diamond mines, the richest mines in
the world.
His active life in vlre affairs of tile
country made for him many foes as
well as friends. He was charged with
being tire principal instigator of the
famous Jameson raid, and to him was
charged by many the responsibility of
Iho prsent war between England arid
the Boers. Previous to the present
war he was popular with the Dutch,
but witnin the last two years he lost
many of his friends among the native
settlers.
Those wlto knew him best contend
that he was more sinned against than
Hinton.;.
He was a man of pronounced
views and strong individuality, in
i •ii'scmience of which, at the time
ef his death he was very unpopular
,vith tiro Dutch, but those who knew
lorn best claim, had ids life been pro
longed, lie would have re-established
iris influence with that element in
South Africa.
Whether or not he invited all the
columning that has been heaped on his
bead, we know not, but his achieve
ments and lr.s life, offer a magnifi
cent object lesson to the average
young man of today.
The Brunswick board of trade is
pushing the approaching Garre ami
Cassava convention to be held here
April 12, and should receive the co
operation of every loyal citizen of
Brunswick.
