COMPLIMENT FOR SENATOR CLAY The Philadelphia Times thrown this bouquet at Senator Clay: "The Washington interview with Senator Olay, of Georgia, is of inter est. chiefly as another Indication of tho desire of southern democrats to unite with those of other sections upon a modern democratic platform. Sc-nntor Clay has already shown him self, in his opposition to the subsidy bill and kindred schemes, to lie a man of positive convictions, lie rec ognizes that: tho party 'must meet file issues that'are now before the peo ple, aud that may arise, and must not look simply to the past,’ and to this he adds: 'We should lie broad and liberal in our policy, tolerant in spirit and cordially invite all demo crats to unite.' "When this spirit prevails general ly through trie south, as it already prevails In the north and cast, demo ‘■•ratio union will be secured, and with union will come strength. The Bour bons and calmity-howiers will lose their power of mischief when they •care to receive countenance from the south. Tariff revision, opposition to class legislation, the reassertion of constitutional principles in tho govern urerrt, should bring all democrats tie get her, and no man of unbiased mind can he blind to the present opportun uitios of a sound aud true democracy. * * * * Political conditions never called more imperatively for aggres sive party action, upon lines that arc clearly marked out for the opposition by the (Election of present republi can policies. This year’s congres sional elections may shape the course of the country’s history for a long time to come and tile southern states can contribute very much to the triumph of democratic principles if they wilt advance their standards to th broad national position suggested by Senator Clay." Tl.is if a handsome compliment to Senator Clay and we gladly quote it' but us must confess that we see no reason why our Philadelphia eonteni f O’ary should bo so doubtful of other southern democrats, “Tariff revision, opposition to class legislation and the reassertion of constitutional prin c.p’es—" Surely that is the platform upon which southern democracy has 11 ways taken its station, and wo can s-s no reason therefore, for drawing democrats and their partisans at the any distinction between eo'tth.om north. The t eferenre to "Bourbons and * at amity-howiers,” is all right. We have never been among those who believed that this great country was in any ri a tiger of going to the dogs. Nor are the majority of southern democrats to be classed in any sueh category. There are just as many calamity-howl *rs north of Mason and Dixon's line as on the equator side of it. We thank the Times for its appre ciation of Senatoi Clay, but beg unit it will do the rest of us justke also. ( A SERIOUS MATTER. Congressman Richardson, the dem ocratic leader of the bouse, has un earthed other scandal of huge propor tions. The statements made by the man Christmas concerning the alleged bribery of congressmen to bring about the sale of the Danish West In dies to this country are certainly sur prising. They ate of such a nature that they cannot be ignored. Those close to the dead president are re flected upon severely in the secret report of the man Christmas, to say nothing of his charges of having bril ed members of congress. The Richardson resolutions are designed to cover tlie entire matter and bring the true facts before the American people. Surely tho republican party cannot afford to delay nor hinder this iuvfcFiigatilon In any way. It is un fortunate. however, that the matter did : t come up when Mr. McKinley v .;; v. to defend himself and liift I I::* a*aitist this secret attack. The V.tsasy Herald says: It seems N ' ::U4 .- ID get the Pro|. am -ailr >au. Her iu!-. vg . is:r.,’-s men put on > that way. Good for Mcmteiuaa ’ it may transpire tliut. the man Christmas pocketed the money in is alleged to have spent in buying up congressmen. Some of these con gressmen may be for sale, but Clnlst mas is too small u potato to have pur* based many of them. Senator Jones, of Arkansas, who is chairman of the national democratic committee, lias apparently been de feated by ex-Governor James P. Clark in the primary held on Saturday. Clark’s friends are claiming tluil they are certain of their mans elec titrii on a joint ballot of the general assembly, with nineteen votes to spare. This can be traced directly to the. fact 11 1 iit. tho democrats of Ar katiHas have turned their faces to the setting sun, and have said au revolr to dead issues. The probable candidacy of Chief of Police Wiley Williams, of Columbus, for the position of state prison com missioner, is receiving favorable com ment from the state press. Mr. Williams has made a long and cateful study of criminology in all of ils branches, and lie is well known over the stute on account of ills ear nest advocacy of a law establishing reformatories for youthful criminals, lie tins also been instrumental in se curing various state laws of import ance bearing upon subjects of especial interest to city and state officials.
