THE NEXT HOUSE.
There is at. least a go.prosper
that, the next h mce of representatives
will be democrat In fact the feel
ing among democrats is strong that
It will be and many republicans also
evince an uneasiness in reference to
the next election, which would indi
cate that, they fear they wil* lose
many seats. Certainly t.n© republi
cans have given the people abundant
cause for lo'P.or: change i le
people are growing tired of the folly
nn.lextravagancc of republican meas
ures and policies and it is believed
that this reeling will be strong enough
in resuir in >i deir.o rarle majority at
the next, election. The Houston

next fall. Tli.* Post says:
"In 1872 Grant woe e'e yed presi
dent by an overwhelming majority
that carried tin’ house of representa
tives together with the presidency. In
1874, the reaction so in aim a dem
ocratic house was elected, fores Vd
owlng the election of Tilden with a
democratic r nouse again in 187fi. T here
is a precedent that alarms the repub
licans when they think of the eleoti jns
of 1902 and 1904. Again, the bin
ocrats carried the house in 1878, in
the middle of Hayes' term, and also
in 1882, in the middle of Arthur’s
term. This seems more than a co
incidence. Note again that in 1890,
in the middle of Harrison’s term, a
democratic congress was again elect
ed. foreshadowing Cleveland’s (.elec
tion to his second term in 1892. Does
not t'nat seem to change the coinci
dence into a certainty? In the mid
dle of the terms or Grant, Hayes,
Arthur and Harrison the people
elected a democratic Rouse. Will
they not elect a democratic house in
1902, In the middle ot Roosevelt s
te>m?” 0
The official statement given out at
the white house with regard to the
resignation of Pension Commissioner
Evans is as follows: "Mr. Evans
some months ago verhially expressed
his desire to resign, and finally put
it In writing on March 17. The pres
ident, however, has told him that he
would have to remain as commission
er, in the first place, until ',iis suc
cessor haS been determined upon, and
in the second place, until there is
some position to tender him which the
president will regard as a promotion
and as a fitting reward for his excel
lent services in the department "
It seems that Funston not only
stole his honors as a military here,
taking the credit that belonged to
another man, but he recently wrote
a story of experiences in a country
newspaper office which was stolen
bodily from a collection of California
newspaper stories about fifty years
ago.
THE PINE BELTS OPPORTUNITY.
Year before last 100 head of steers
were fattened in Florida, an account
kept of their weight when feeding
commenced and at end oi period of
75 days. A net profit made per head
of eight dollars. Last year a large
stock owner in Polk county put ninety
acres in velvet beans, kept an ac
count of the cost which was hut $2.50
per acre, turned 300 head of steers,
valued at sl2 per nead, into this
field and let them feed themselves.
Took them out and marketed them
in seventy days. Estimated the meat
worth 5 cents a pound when they
went in the fieiu; doubled the weight
of the bunch and sold at 6 1-2 cents
a pound, making net after deducting
cost of his velvet beans $3,000 on
the bunch.
Others on a smaller scale are en
gaged in this business. It is destined
to increase rapidly. It costs for
added weight of stock, cattle and
bogs fed on cassava, the velvet bean
1 1-2 to 3 cents a pound for added
weight. It costs lor added weight in
the west 5 cents per pound.
M*-at will never he essentially
lower than it is now. The demand
increases every year. The home mar
ket and the foreign market will take
every steer which can be fattened.
Western stock l'atteners are buying
land in Florida for ranges and upon
which to glow' cassava and the vel
vet. bean.
Our plney woods, flattie fattened
on these foods milk. Jnh i a.’l ten
der meat. It will work a revolution
in the character of meat even from
a razor-back ’nog.
This yellow pine belt is destined
to become the gnat range for. and
the fattener of meats for the mar
ivtLs of this eountrp and the world
We arc to become, through cassava
producers of the finest starch, which
can lie made with a demand practical
ly uiiliriiiied. it is for us to deter
mine how rapidly this most desirable
consummation shall bo reached, and
how large a part south Geotgia shall
take. Keep up the Interest, continue
to hold conventions, compare in
creased acreage of cassava and the
velvet bean. Establish starch fac
tories, and these products with syrup
shall give safe and certain money
crops, and commercial independence.
