Brunswick should make the com ing Memorial day exercises notable, for the reason that the i onfederate monument Is to he unveiled. The state press is mailing some very favorably comment on the coming Cane and Cassava convention, which is to be held in Brunswick Apiii 12. Those German farmers, who have recently come to Glynn county, will in all probability, convince tlie peo lib* it this section that the farming industry, like aii others, only needs attentiin to lie made successful. “The eggs,of the census year at a cent apiece were worth $150,000,000. ’That is something woi'lli cackling ov lsl >. v s t!fl Birmingham Age-Her abl. SEEMS TO BE SETTLED. The returns from the Arkansas pri mary eli tlion held last Saturday show that Senator Jas K. Jones was le feated and that er-Governor t-~*i p. Clarks was nominated by the .iemo crats to succeed him. Senator Jones has beeii in the Unit ed States senate for a long time, but his record in that body has not been suc’n as to give him much prom inence. His most prominent service, perhaps, was as chairman of the na tional democratic committee during the campaigns of 1896 and 1900, but in neither of these did he show con spicuous ability except as a most sanguine hoper. In fact his efforts during each campaign were more or less amusing, and democrats general ly never regarded him seriously. His defeat in the present campaign was doubtless due as much to his connec tion with I’ne Round Cotton Bale com pany as to anything else. In view of the democratic position on trusts ami monopolies, Ids, opponent, who did not fail to characterize the round bale company as a monopoly, urged it against him with telling effect, and he was defeated. Mr. Clark is a man of superior ability, and in Idm Arkansas will have a strong representative. The iJibra.K entertainment Mon* day night is in a good cause amt should be well patronized. The game "gerrymander came about, from a bill introduced early In the century by Kldrldge (ierod, of Massachusetts, to change the dis tricts in ids state for political pur poses. A newspaper of that dais printed a certain showing a man of one of the districts pictured as a hor rible animal which took the name gerrymander. To gerrymander has become a verb in common use in po litical life. Mr. Crumpacker’s name may also live in history if the scheme to reduce the representation of the South goes through.
