The officers' of t’no cane and cas sava convention arc being tnnudated with letters asking for cassava seed, cither a free distribution or by pur chase. Unfortunately the entire sup ply of seed procured by the hoard of trade is planted. Last year 15,000 seed was gratuitously distributed. This year private parties asked Mr. Ogg to purchase for them 00,000 seed, and he made an oruer in ample time for that amount and 40,000 more seed for free distribution oy tne board of trade. He was surprised to learn that owing to wider areas being planted he could get but 35,000 seed, which were all planted within a day alter arrival In Brunswick. These letters asking for Rood are from every county in south Georgia, and illustrate the wonderful interest aroused by the two conventions held last, year in a section where the cas sava plant was practically unknown prior to these conventions. A most cerservatllve' estimate of the number of acreas planted tills year due directly to these conven tions Is 50 acres here and In coun ties adjoining ours. Seed for an average of 15 'hills can be saved from each hill. It is easily saved if simple directions are fol lowed. Thus this 50 acres should give us seed for 750 acres next year. Present prices of seed are $2.50 per 1,000, or if7s per seed from one acre. It will be cheaper as areas are ex tended, hut will hardly command less than $1.60 per 1,000 for years or $45 per acre for all surplus seed. A lit tle effort will give us next year a large enough area 1,000 acres to bring to Brunswick a starch factory. In the meantime any surplus cas sava root can be promptly sold to the Florida starch factories at tile ■rate of $6.00 per ton, f. o. b. here. These Florida factories absorbed the entire surplus crop of roots front a largely increased area of last year's planting in Florida, besides large areas planted by such companies, and are now using the eumptle root, a Wi*d variety found on the east coast of Florida, to keep running until a new crop comes in. The largely in ci eased use of the root iu fattening stock is responsible for much of this shortage of supply for the starch fac tories. Cassava and the velvet bean will make the southern pine licit with its favorable climate the great stock fat tening section of this country. Cassava will enable us to supply an unlimited demand for the finest starch which can lie made at prices with which potato, corn and wheal starch cannot compete. Every farmer in Glynn county should' attend the convention next Saturday, not only lending the sup port of his presence. But obtaining ffttormatTbn which will be invaluable to him, about cassava, the velvet bean, syrup and starch making. No movement in south Georgia in the last twenty-five years for the ma terial development of the section lias been so important and so worthy of the earnest support of every south Georgia citizen. CALUMBUB WANTS IT. In discussing Columbus railroads, present and future, the Enquirer-Sun of that city says: Still another road which Columbus is hopeful of getting is the Bruns wick and Birmingham. This road is now building from Brunswick west ward, and if it builds a direct line to Birmingham it cannot miss Columbus. President Hyde, of this road, was in Columbus recently on his first visit., and he was greatly impressed with Columbus' wonderful industrial ad vantages. The belief is growing stronger that this road will soon be extended to its Alabama destination, and the people of Columbus, of course, stand ready to offer any inducement to bring it by this city. The people of Brunswick have a warm spot in their hearts for Co lumbus, and would like to see the two cities connected by steel. With the great western markets, of which Columbus is a logical dis tributing point, that city would be a valuable addition to the traffic of the new Brunswick and Birmingham. And probably it is not going too far in this connection to say that at tne proper time Columbus will lie given an opportunity to offer some inducements for the line. Candidate Ouerry should join Sam Jones in the latter s anti-whiskey crusade. Smith is soon to announce his an nouncement —to stay out of the race — Sensible Smith! Good advice is often disregarded! That Zebu ion dispatch to Dupont Guerry, for Instance. ■ - Cnristmas may have been a “slneh" for the lobbyists, hut he broke into very select official circles in Washing ton just the same. Atlanta is making a light against the increase in fire insurance rates. Atlanta is right, and Brunswick should join in tne fray. The cane and cassava convention comes to Brunswick next Saturday. Some very able addresses will he made, and the meeting promises to be largely attended. Senator Jones, of Arkansas, claims that the Arkansas legislature will elect him, when it meets. When last heard lrotn Jones was still claim ing the election of Mr. Bryan in 1896. The Augusta Chronicle’s Atlanta correspondent thinks a dark horse may step iu and take off the Guber natorial prize. Terrell and Estill won't subscribe to that uoctine, how ever. As evidence that the Montgomery Advertiser once in a while experi ences a season of sound judgment on things political, the following should not be overlooked: "it is well enough to talk about democrats pre senting “an unbroken front to the enemy,” but who can tell us now to do it? It strikes us that neither tne republican nor democratic party has such a thing in stock as an unbroken front. We. might go at 'em with a repaired front, and tuat is about the best we can sec. Pipes!
