Atlanta' new daily, it is said, will
have unlimited capital behind it. That
has been the trouble with ail those
now buried "new Atlanta dailies” —
their capital has been too far behind.
A telegram received by Col. 0. P.
Goodyear last night from Charleston,
brings word that Secretary Wilson
wHI arrive in the city Friday night
and will address the cane and cassava
convention on Saturday.
From all indications the coming sea
son at both Cumberland and St. Simon
will be good ones. Already those who
live in .the interior are making In
quiries, and as soon as the c'neap rates
go on the tourists will begin to come.
The candidacy of Capt. Wiley Wil
liams, of Columbus, for prison
mmissloner, has been auspiciousiy
launched by the democrats of Musco
gee county, ana Capt. Williams will
und many supporters in ail sections of

There is love of fighting ingrained
In the Anglo-Saxon nature. Even the
Religious Herald, of Richmond, Va.,
which would probably decline to re
port a prize flgnt. has a long ac
count of a battle between two rams,
which is told with great gusto.
The cane am. cassava convention
will meet In Brunswick Saturday next,
and ptomiscs to be a thoroughly in
teresting session. Among other no
table speakers will bo Secretary of
Agriculture Wilson, who will be the
special guest of honor ot the asso
ciation.
The death of clever Charley Ellis,
formerly of the Atlanta Journal staff,
which occurred In Tampa Monday,
will be deeply regretted throughout
the press circles of the state. He
was an able exponent of the fourth
estate, and though his life was brief,
being only 25 years, it was not
without accomplishment iu his chosen
held of endeavor.
We are just in receipt of a copy
of the able speech, recently delivered
in congress by Representative Brant
ley on Cuban reciprocity It is an
able and logical effort, indicates a
thorough knowledge of the subject,
and in the many interruptions made
by various republicans Mr. Brantley
acquitted himself admirably. The
speech has been pronounced one of
the ablest vet delivered in congress
on the subject
Again the stern hand of death has
touched that old remnant of veterans
left with us. and yesterday afternoon
all that was mortal of Cap* Chas.
K. Flanders, was laid to rest, in Oak
Grove cemetery. Full fnilitar.v hon

and In his deau Brunswick has lost
one of her oldest and most highly es
teemed citizens, whoso record in life
was one of t'ne distinction. In every

A PRETTY TRIBUTE.
Judge Emory Speer, in an able
charge to the grand jury in the United
States court at Augusta, a few days
igo, paid the American home a high
tributey Judge Speer said, on this
subject:
“The cultivation of domestic virtue
has made the American home tue
'deal of the philosopher and the poet,
tnd well justifies in the hearts of
ar countrymen and our cou,ntry
vonien the sweet and simple lines,
‘Be it ever so humble, there’s no
place like home.”
And from American homes so nar
•ow in their opportunities, when the
environment of chili penury would
seem to repress every ardent aspira
tion, have gone forth multitudes of
great the memory of
whose achievements will be co-exten
3ive with the annals of our race. What
ver walk of, life wet contemplate,
we find abounding illustrations of
this truth. Whether in the profes
sion of arms we contemplate a
Washington, a Jackson, or a Forrest:
n law, a Marshall, a Story or a
Webster; in statecraft, a Lincoln, a
Garfield, or a. McKinley; in inventive
science, a Whitney, a Morse or an
Edison, —it is demonstrable beyond
inestion that no country equally with
ours affords so many and such opu
!ent rewards for high endeavor, with
in the reach of the worthy sons of
the poor. And how marvelously
broadened the opportunities of youth
with every benignant step towards the
advancement of universal education!
Since there is no darkness so impen
etrable as that of ignorance, there is
no light so radiant or beneficent as
the light of the mind. In hundreds of
thousands of schools, academies and
colleges, the intellectual light in niil-
Mons of our children and youth Is
daily kindled by the torch of earn
ing. Thus the education of the peo
pie will continue to grow, a beneficent
flame, ever stronger and ever bright
er, until it will rival the benignant
glow which bursts over creation when
the ftlvlnc Artificer exclaimed,
et there be light."
CHAIRMAN GRIGcS.
The selection of lion. Jan. M.
• iggs as chairman of the congres
sional campaign committee Is meet
ing with favorable comment from the
democratic press In all sections of
the country. The Albany, (N. Y.)
Argus has this to say:
“Judging by all appearances, this
“ear’s campaign is to be an old fash
'oned, red hot light all along the line,
and old hands at the turnip nap.,,
to the ‘feel of the road,’ are looking
ahead to democratic victory. It Is
a time when wise leadership and
sagacious management win '•mint for
auch; and what Is known or the man
rom Georgia is in his favor."
Such comments are encouraging
md what is till more so is the fact
hat the democrats of the north and
ast, as is stated by the Argus, “are
n a mood to receive a hearty good
vill and fellowship, any and all sug
estions looking to a closer alliance
ind a better organization of demo
crats everywhere without regard to
section." Such a disposition and
spirit among .lemocratp should be
fostered, for only in such a harmoni
ous union of forces can the party
hope to achieve success at the polls
next fall.
Brunswick will be well represent
ed at Albany's Chautauqua on Mili
tary day. The Riflemen, tire Naval
Reserves and the Marine band ate all
going. We commend them to the
tender care of Editor Mclntosh.
