With reference to a recent editor ini published in Tin- News, about the Brunswick & Birmingham railroad go ing to Columbus, the Enquirer-Sun, of tlint city, says: "There is no question that Colum bus would be a valuable addition to the new Brunswick and Birmingham, in fact the road could not touch an other city which would be of as much value to it. In addition to being the most, important cotton manufacturing city In the south. Columbus is also in the center of one of the finest farming sections in the state. These facts taken into connection with the further fact that road be built on a direct line it cannot miss Columbus, should make it almost as sured that the road will touch this city "It would seem these indueements would be suindent, if no others should he offered, to cause the railroad to come here, but in addition to these Columbus will doubtless give other substantlan inducements to the enter prise when the opportunity to which The News refers is presented. Colum bus fully appreciates the great, ad vantage of Such a road and, of course, stands ready to offer any reasonable inducement that will bring it to tn.s city,” We thoroughly apreciate the facts contained in the editorial refered to and the people of Brunswick are in dulging the hope that, in a few nonths, the two cities will he con nected by the new route to the west, the completion of which is now ab solutely assured. Candidate Guerrv has been quiet for •ereral days. Is he taking some liver regulator? And now some of these taeetous exchanges will soon be asking "wliat happened to Jones?” Isn't Brunswick and Glynn county going to be represented at the Dallas reunion this month? J. Pierpont Morgan says the United States is good enough for him. It has certainly been good enough to him— considerably better than he deserved. Ferham is now claiming that Way cross is the logical place for the head quarters of the Atlantic Coast Dine and Plant System combination. Per ham should be a campaign manager. * Often a quite assfiied remark be comes sanctified by use and petrified by custom: it is then a permanency, its terms of activity a geological pe riod."—Mark Twain. Well, it is sim ply the change of a vowel; assified becomes ossified. "The engagement of Etta Pigg and T. M. Catt. of Stark county. 111.,’ is announced.” Philadelphia Times. This can harly be called a cock and bull story', but it is a cat and pig talc that sounds as if it might be the least hit short of absolute veracity. THE CONVENTION TODAY. The third convention of the sugar cane and cassava association will be held at the city hall today and to the members of the association and its in vited guests of honor, who come to de liberate wit.i them, we bid a warm and cordial welcome. Few movements in the past have been thought with more genuine In terest and are as productive of the good results that this association is destined to bring to this section. The cultivation of the soil is at all times a lofty duty, but when those who are interested in the work touch upon new theories and bring into usefulness a product heretofore unutilized the work becomes sublime. From time to time we have called attention to the fact that the cultivation of cassava is not an iridescent dream, but since this movement has attracted the at tention of southeast Georgians it has been planted in large quantities and it has been demonstrated beyond any per adventure or doubt that it can be cultivated, and that. too. at a hand some profits to the farmer who will give his time to it. Cassava, unlike similar products, can he used for various and diversified purposes, in Florida it is used largely In the manuracture of starch, and ex ports on the subject have pronounced that the starch manufactured from it is superior to that now on the market. As food for stock, cassava has few if any equals. It is peculiarly nutricious and if properly used it means suffi cient supply of fattening meat fur home use and for export purposes. Another proposition which this asso ciation has brought to the attention of the farmers is the wider cultivation or sugarcane and the velvet bean. Large crops of either of these com modities mean new sources of rev enue for the farmer and iage increases of population, not only among the farming interests but in all walks of endeavor In southeast Georgia. The association today has several distinguished gentlemen who will ad dress the meeting, among whom may be mentioned Secretary of Agriculture Wilson, of the. United States govern ment,: and oommissione of Agricul ture 0. B. Stevens, of Georgia. Both these gentlemen. aB well as others on the program, mave made a life study of the question of agriculture and are among the best authorities in the country on the subject. Their tils t courseis will, therefore, be of unus ual Interest to those who are actually engaged in farming, and it is to be hoped that the farmers of Brunswick and Glynn county wil take advantage of this opportunity to hear some pro found dissertations on the subject which cannot fail to interest, them. We wish the convention great sue cess In Its truly noble worn, From time immemorial the tillers of the soil have been among the grandest creations of God’s handiwork, and to them today this great country of mag nifiemit resource and glorious achieve ment must look for sustenance and maintenance. That this great movement will suc ceed there can be no doubt and If this' association is properly sustained the historian ten years hence will have the pleasant duty of recording the grandest increase in wealth, in population and in material develop, meant that this section has ever ex perienced The river and harbor bill, just re ported to the senate, carries of new appropriations for Georgia $554,000. in addition to continuing contracts amounting to $1,124,000. Of this amount Brunswick gets $165,000 for outer bar and inner harbor; $15,000 for Jekyl creek and $15,000 for a survey of Clubb creek. CHEAP RATES TO DALLAS.
