Aceneia club was entertained Wednesday by Mrs. R. B. Tupper. The decorations were beautiful, the color scheme being yellow. The re froshmenfs were served in dainty lit tle butterfly-shaped boxes; the store cards were butterflies, and tne count ers were yellow buttercups. The first prize, a butterfly sofa pillow, was won y Miss Mary l.iila Blanton, and the consolation by Mrs. E. D. Walter. • • The Excelsior Literary society held an unusually interesting meeting on Friday and the following new officers were elected: President, James Os borne: secretary, Clare O'Couor; vice president. McDonald Harley, and !i --liraian, Leila Bunkley. A contest In elocution among the g.ris was much enjoyed. Those who recited were Leah Johnson. Alice Martin, Rebecca Davis. Lucy HoTtzendorff, Leila Bunk ley. Mary Ellenwood, Maggie Davis, Lily Gornto, Clare O'Connor, Nellie Kenner, Emma Cornell, and Martha Olsen. The judges were Mrs. R. R. Hopkins, Mrs. 0. \Y. Blanton and Miss Mamie Waff. Their decision will be rendered on Monday. On Friday night, at the higu school, an entertainment will be given by the teachers to the children, patrons and friends of the school. Mr. A. V. Wood having allowed the use of his magic lantern for the occasion. The entertainment wii! be a trip through the United States, and is to illustrate the geography and nature work be ing done in the schools. Pictures oi ail the places of interest, both nat ural and political, will be shown, the idea being to give object lessons In these studies and familiarize the children with the appearance, places and objects which afe simply ab stract conceptions to them now. Ob ject lessons accomplish more In one evening in studies of this kind than months of mere textbook, phraseology and memory work, and the teachers will endeavor to have a series of these entertainments in the future in, order to illustrate by actual repre- sentation, the various oejects studied about. Some very amusing scenes will also be shown, and the entertain ment promises to he productive of much enjoyment as well as benefit! The pictures wfll be described by Mr. Ballard, whose knowledge of the subject under discussion is deep and thorough. The public is invited to attend and encourage the teachers in their efforts to advance education. • * * The ladies of the Cemetery society held their annual election of officers Thursday afternoon, at the chapel in the cemetery, dedicating the little building at the same lime. A large number of members were present and inteersting reports were rendered. Mrs. G. O. Wilder, who has made a most successful presid-ent, was re elected, as was also Mrs. T. F. Smith, who, aa vice president and general so licitor for the society, has been most zealous in her laiois and accomplished much good. Mrs. J. 41. Mason was elected secretary. The chapel is a beautiful little building, and adds greatly to the appearance of the cem etery. The ladies are working untir ingly towards betoitifying the hal lowed spot, and i.esorve tlm success which they meet with on ail sides. * * * The Naval Reserves' armory was the scene, on 'Wednesday i veiling oi one of the most attractive masquer ade germans which has ever been enjoyed by the younger society folk. The hall was given by the young men In compliment to their lady friends. All the dancers were en masque, earn representing their particular charac ter with an especial attra< tiveue s if their own. Aoci j; the most ;lah orate costumes were those of Miss Madge Young, who, in black gauze and gilt spangles, represented night; Mi ah Maude N'pio gale, who made an ideal paper doll in costume of col ored tissue, decorated in huge chrysanthemums. Miss Tallulah Flem ing, who was a graceful Gypsy girl, .Vliss Mamie Webster, who charming ly portrayed the character of a colo nial dame; Mescsrs.
