ON the convention.
The Havannau Morning News of yes
terday has the following editorial oil
the rec ent cane anti cassava conven
ti 11 in this city;
t’lie Cane and Cassava convention
In Brunswick, a report of which'*wo
published yesterday, was an important
a i interesting one. a is stated by a
fc n lonian who was prusont mat it
was one of the largest, most repre
sentative arid intelligent conventions
tnat ever met m Georgia, or in the
south, to listen to and deliberate on
matters pertaining to agriculture.
From every county of Lower Georgia
and from many counties of Florida
there were delegates, each eager to
learn more about cassava ami sugar
cane, for the purpose of promoting
the development of these industries in
their respective states. Brunswk k had
done her part towards making the
meeting a successful one, and it will
be memorable us marking the begin
ning of the opening up of anew
source of wealth in south Georgia'and
Florida, The day was fine, and the
occasion was enjoyed by all of those
who had accept**, the invitation of
the Brunswick board of trade.
Ihe feature of the occasion was
the address of the lion. James Ma
son. secretary of agriculture. No
synopsis of it could do it justice,
islanding at ease and employing grace
ful language and gestures, the secre
tary gave his auditors a succinct his
tory of what his department has done
and is doing to build up the agricult
ural interests of the country. What
he said will make every one who
listened to him feel that there In n
greater future" than they ever dreamed
of for then-selves m those who will
come after them.
The addresses of the other gentle
men who spoke to the convention
were also eloquent, entertaining and
instructive. The success of the con
vention is a guarantee 01 our sister
city of Brunswick that the people of
lower Georgia appreciate the efforts
which she has made iu behalf of the
greater agricultural prosperity of
their section.
GEN. WADE HAMPTON!
Genera! Wade Hampton, of South
Carolina, full ol years and of honors,
has gone to join the silent majority
on the other shore. iiis death re
moves from the south one of her best
beloved sons and from the nation a
most loyal and pat riot u 1 supporter.
General Hampton was a splendid
typo of manhood, in all the relations
of life tliis was manifest -as a sol
dier. as a statesman and as a c itizen.
'l'ne descendant of a proud race, he
lived up to iho ideals of his people.
He was courtly and chivalrous, patri
otic amt true, and although all that
was mortal of him has passed from
earth, the influences of his exemplary
life will live long. All honor to the
niamory of this good and true man.
BRANTLEV’S GOOD WORK.
Now that the commerce committee
of the senate has completed its re
vision and amendments of me river
and harbor bill, agd has given to the
press the items affecting Georgia, a
brief review of the results of the
work of the congressman of the
Eleventh district, aided by the sen
ators of Georgia, has as-conjpMshed
for this city and his enti'-" district
and state is, we mink, timejy.
The improvement of our harbor/ bur
insi.lo route, our rivers, while of su
preme importance to us, are also sub
jects of interest to every citizen of
the state.
Tiie bill contains as it now stands
an appropriation of $165,000 for our
inner harbor and outer bar, an in
crease of $25,000 in that item, as it
passed the house, $15,000 for Jekyl
creek and the dividlngs, a portion of
the inside water route of vital im
portance to our commerce, a provision
for survey of the proposed connec
tion of Child) and Plantation creeks,
a matter not only of immediate value
to our city, hut also to all that large
section of our state in the Eleventh
:md .other congressional districts
drained by fine Altamana, Oconee and
Ocmuigee rivers, and a water outlet
"or the products of this.section of the
state. The appropriations ins* nmcd
were added in the senate after tne
bill left the house through the efforts
of Congressman Brantley and Sena
tor Clay, as a member of the com
merce committee. The appropriation
for the Ocmuigee was also increased
through the efforts of our senators
mu! congressman of the districts ir
terestod, our Mr. Brantley doing every
thing in his power.
This is a tremendous increase of
appropriations carried in the river
and harbor bill affecting our port am,
congressional district, and it is be
lieved will lie retained in the bill and
become laws.
It' the work done by Mr. Brantley
in connection with this hill, whicn
is not a work merely of this session,
hut a persistent and untiring work
for three sessions of congress, were
all that had been done it would com
mand the verdict of "we.i done" by
all the people of the Eleventh congres
sional district.
But in addition there is no reason
able doubt of his procuring at this
session the necessary additional ap
propriation above the $ 100,000 he had
already secured for our public build
ing to insure a building harmonious
in design-, of which every citizen of
Brunswick will be justly proud.
He has nlso been active, earnest
and untiring in |, m efforts to ~r ocllro
an appropriation for a national exper
iment, station for south Georgia of vital
■ mportance to Glynn anu every other
county iu his district.
For a light snip oft ibis coast and
added range lights in our harbor in
valuable to our commerce and to the
country generally, and which will if
ri °t provided for in uio present ses
sion, certainly soon be granted by
congress.
His efforts to procure sessions ot
the United States court tor Valdosta,
and bis efforts lor every section of
his district have been all that could
been -desired.
The incorporation in Hie river and
harbor bill of the item for Col. C. P.
Goodyear of $45,000 is a measure of
justice for a great pubuc work which
wc have already re. erred to with
great satisfaction, and its passage
through the house without-objection
is largely due to the cogent reasons
for this course urged by Mr. Brantley
and tue array of facts and commer
cial benefits resulting from the owrk
done.
The wisdom of retaining a strong
delegation in congress so long as
they will stay which has given Maine
and other states such prestige in con
gress is being justified in Georgia, and
we trust this policy -will continue.
The Chautauqua edition of the Al
bany Herald is a splendid success,
and reflects great credit on Editor
Mclntosh, and the citizens of Albany
generally. The News is confident that
the Chautauqua this year will be a
great success, aud several Brunswick
organizations arc going to help make
it so.
