The News Publishing Company de sires it to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid for lu advance. We cannot afford to devote our space to such advertise ments and wait on the- courts for the money. What this country seems to want Is Chinese whlc'n open only on the inside. ■ i fr * Nine vessels is the arrival record for Brunswick for Wednesday and Thursday. —■ **tr -* - Santos Diunont had to pay s*'*3o duty on his aerial machine, and he is up In the air about It. General Miles asks for no court of Inquiry. He evidently remembers the workings of the last one. The war in the Philippines is over hut fighting with long casualty lists continues to lie reported. There seems to be several rather strong strings tied to the declaration of peace, between the Boers and the British. Over fifty more speeches are to he made on the. Cuban reciprocity bill. The Washington press gallery has our sympathy. Senator Jones says he has some ex planations to make, lie had a simi lar duty to perform in 1890 and 1900. which is still forth coming. Brunswick is not growing hysteri cal over the political situation, lmt is devoting herself to the industrial improvement of her people generally. Toe Atlanta Constitution is urging that the state build it railroad to the sea. Brunswick would make the Georgia Railroad a splendid deep wa ter terminus. The new pension commissioner. Mr. Ware, is a poet. He will have to sing some catchy sonnets to the gal axy of pension grabbers now waiting for him at the pension pie counter. A series of the new postal stamps will be ornamented with the lace. Docs the post office department contem plate that this will make it easier for the stamps to go through the mail? • It is persistently rumored that the great Armour Packing house is to erect a large cold storage warehouse ui Brunswick at an early date, and make this city a dcstributing point for its Florida and South Georgia terri maits? Tampa is raising a bowl because the postmaster of that city has re cently appointed „ a negro mail car rier. Here in Brunswick we have nothing else, and it is simple justice to them to say that this department of the postal service is in every way a satisfactory one. If the additional $60,000 asked for by Congressman Brantley, for our public Building is allowed, it will be applied to the third story of the building, which wIU be fitted up for a United States court ropm. The board of trade should demoralize con gress, through Senators Clay and Ba con and Congressman Brantley, on this subject. SECRET SERVICE FOLLY. The Charleston News and Courier makes some caustic comments upon a certain feature of the president’s visit to Charleston and its conclu sions are doubtless shared by most people, especially in the south. The News and Courier says: In his account of the president’s visit to Charleston, the correspondent of the Washington Star said: “There are more secret service men and Washington detectives here than I ever saw following a president Three times as many as ever went anywhere with McKinley.” And he might have added that they did not earn their salt. With the exception of the two de tectives sent to Charleston by Major Sylvester, of the Washington police force, and two of the sercret service men, who kept In the background, dressed like gentlemen ana who sat at the president’s dinner in full dress, the rest of the gang were generally a nuisance. They were always con spicuously in evidence; always in the way;. always posing, so tlmt they cob Id not have detected anything if there had ‘Yrecn anything to detect; and auSutnmerville they spent at least a part of the night in liberal libations and made no provision for the safe guarding of the president. On the other hand, Sylvester’s me® were al ways around without, being offensive ly obtrusive and without wearing file secret service look of important which said to any person who might have been on mischief bent, ‘,’We are detec tives. and we’ll catch you if you don’t look out.” it was right and proper, of course, to tfuard the president so that he should not bo rmnoyed oy the crowd — there was never any danger that n.ny one would attempt to da him Injur**; hut the secret service men sent here were not competent for this dut.v. Contain Henry Leonard and his Ma rine corps were worth a thousand of the other sort; and really did most efficient service. They were oilier and always alert, and were praised by the president for their admirable conduct. It is hoped that in such further ov l*edltions as he may make through the country from time to time—and we trust, that lie will eome this way again —the president will insist on picking his protectors, so that the secret ser vice'farce played here last week shall nut he repeated anywhere else. A street railway company in New Jersey has just oeen assessed in dam ages $9,000 for tiie loss of a leg, and nt the same time another street rail way company in New York has been assessed $15,000 for the loss of an ttrmv, while a verdict of sio,ooo has been returned in Brooklyn for the death °f a man. Whatever may be said of this from a legal aspect, it is rather confusing physiologically. Change of Schedule*.
