BRANTLEY OF GEORGIA. The Now York Times of yesterday publishes an editorial entitled "Hon or to Mr. Brantley, of Georgia, which pays a big'll tribute to the brave and brainy representative of tho Eleventh Georgia district. The Times says: "Wo 'extend to lion, William G. Brantley, of Georgia, our sincere con gratulations. “His speech In the house of repre sentatives!, on Monday, was worthy of (lie best period of democracy, and of ♦he best representation of the party from the south. He plainly defined the one principle as to w'nleh the Dem oeratio party now has any chance of being respected and reform of the op pressive and repressive tariff. He de clared hia intention of supporting the Cuban reciprocity hill because it con tained a cut in tue tariff—a small cut. only 20 per cent., anu for trade with only one not very large eounty, but a out nevertheless. And he laid down the perfectly simple proposition that his party was bound in principle and by the highest expediency to uphold everything, no matter from what source it came, which tended to pro mote the end It has In view. "This is exactly the nno adopted by our own representative, Mr. McClel lan. It is the line that must lie adopt ed by tlie party if it hopes to accom plish anything.' ■Mr.' Brantley ueserves this praise, every word of It. Before he went to congress nnd over since he has been there he has shown that he is a man of convictions to which be will stand through thick and thin and which ho is ever ready to defend with abili., of a high order. Georgia is proud of William G. Brantley.—Atlanta Journal. These commendations which are lin ing showered upon the Brunswick congressman certainly give his con stituency abundant cause for grati fication. Mr. Brantley is making a reputation .or himself and for his state, and ais people nave perfect con -11 Jenee in any and every attitude he assumes in the national congress. The Atlanta Constitution is making a "plen.lid tight for the extension of Hie Georgia Railroad to the coast. Such a move would make the line a i valuable one, nud when tho mat tei gets in proper shape Brunswick has some splendid reasons to ad vance showing this port to be the logical deep water terminus of the lire. President Palma, so long an exile, does not. return .nnder tho brightest auspices to Cuba to assume the chief magistracy. But ne takes with him the heartiest wishes for the success of the young republic from mSUU~“ of Americans, who do not share in the narrow and calculating notion of statesmanship exemplified by the dom inant party at Washington. THE MOVEMENT IS GROWING. There are no differences of opinion as to the success of our recent sugar cane and cassava convention "on the 12th„ inst. The two which preceded -A R made this with its able array of speakers, Including the secretary of a great department of our national government ..possible. The deep interest taken by the prase of 3ottth Georgi# and tue metropoli tan press of the state In this move ment, and the kindly aid extended to it 1b an indication of the recognized value of the movement In all sec tions of Georgia. , The wide area in which cassava was experimentally planted last year, in which it ip -planted, as a crop this year, the great interest aroused in. and wide planting of the velvet bean the companion food crop for stock with cassava, the deep interest taken in the fattening of stock with these and other forage plants is a demon stration that a revolution is coming in our methods, that wo are on the eve of entering the' markets of this country and the world as stock feed ers and fatteuers, and starch and syrup producers on a large scale. The correspondence elicited by the preparation of this convention, inun dating the mails of the president and secretary of the board of trade and pi evident of the cane and cassava as sociation, asking for cassava seed, is a demopsfration of the ext*-* v/h'cii interest has been aroused, and the in 1< filiation received of the ex tent to which velvet bean growing hna already extended in every county in South Georgia is of the most hope ful character. The board of trade of uiiswick in the past two years, has done a largo amount of valuable w<-'- nnd has valuable results to Its credit, but net more valuable than this cane and cassava movement. The Georgia fruit crop is now thought to he safe and this means about' $3,000,000 in the pockets of the growers. The George drummers, Jolly, good fellows that tb-'/y are, are holding their annual meeting in Atlanta today G od luck to them! The New York Sun is agitating the question: Do Sheep Drink? We do not know, but it is a common thilig to hear of a man being full as a goat. The Brunswick board of trade held an Interesting meeting yesterday, and several subjects of importance were discussed.
