The News Publishing Company de sires it to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid for in ad,vance. We cannot afford to devote our space to such advertise meuts and wait on the courts for the money. From all indications something is likely to “drop” at the meeting of Jackson Camp of Confederate Veter ans this evening. Miss Alice Roosevelt seems to he built rather on the "strenuous” plan herself. She is going to take a ride in Santds Dumont’s air ship, Ouerry continues to challenge Ter rell, and the latter continues his cam paign just as if Gucrry has never announced his dSndidTy. The river and harbor bill has passed the senate, which means fJßf>,- 000 for Brunswick’! harbor, besides an item of *45,000 for Col. C. P. Goodyear. According to the Albany Herald, the Chautauqua of that city has opened un tier the most favorable auspices. Such organizations are great benefits, and we would like to see a similar movement inaugurated in Brunswick. The summer season is approaching and still we have no hotr.-i on St. Si mon. Why some enterprising man does not take advantage of this in vestment. which is Burs of good divi dends. is a mystery to us. Ami Dewey are tlio Regent’s orbs. Those eyes of heavenly blue. And Dewey fell discouraged? We Dew not think we Dew. This is a sample of me political gifts of the new pension commission er. MT. Ware. The man who could uncork such rot, will surely be a “cinch" in the hands of the pension pie hunter# in Washington. W. L. (Ressner, the well known commissioner of the agricultural de partment iff the G.. S. & F. railway company, has just issued a neat lit tle booklet on stock raising in Geor gia and Florida, which lias found Its way to our desk. The velvet bean and cassava subject is ably treated, and the book contains some splendid in formation on fanning lines generally. A VIEW FROM GOTHAM. The New York Shareholder, a financial publication and quite a fac tor In the commercial circles of Gotham, in its issue of April 17. makes a very creditable editorial reference to the Brunswick and Birmingham railroad company. The Shareholder says: Nothing so forcibly shows the high estimate put upon railroad properties in the south as the determination of investors not to part with their prop erties. The best illustration of it was shown in Tuesday's record break ing dealings in the Southern railway. Not so far back, a few hundred shares per day was an average of the trading done in this company's stocks. The tremendous earnings show that tne territory traversed by the South ern is furnishing so much tonnage that when speculators sought its con trol it drove the greatest nouse in the street to the rescue, with the result that no railroad property on any •ex change ever showed ’such - financial dealings in one day. It is reasonable to suppose that the merit is in the property and the foundation is bound to be in the coun try at large. This paper has regularly called at tention to the wonaerful prospects of the Southern section. Many of our patrons have asked if the practical combination of all the railroads in the, south, into one hand would not put all the little roads out of busi ness. Unhesitatingly we answer “No." It will be the reverse. Far seeing men know first Oi all that underlying conditions must be favorable to the building of new roads in that sec tion, otherwise those that exist would not lie sought after as they are. The general public does not stop to think that rew railroads Traverse the southern section. Take, for nistance, Birmingnara, which is second only to Pittsburg in the amount of tonnage furnished, and with this week’s corninnatTons it will not, have a single independent road to tidewater. Such a condition can not iast because, with a tonnage sev eral times larger than the wnole cot ton crop, it is absurd to that the peo ple who furnish that tonnage, will sub mit to being bottled up and left to the mercy of one combination. There is already started an inde pendent line from Brunswick to Bir mingham that has reached nearly one hundred miles in distance. It is be ing built so quietly that but little notice has been taken of it, but we predict that it will be beard from la ter on as a regulator, if not a disturb er, in the district from Blrmingaam to Atlantic tidewater. The southern press tells us of cargo after cargo of rails arriving and discharging at Brunswick, and that track laying is rapidly progressing westward. This is about all we hear, as the promoters seeim to be well supplied with mon ey, and also seem to be indifferent to what the public thinks of tv. The pronounced friendliness shown this roaa all along (he line is a pret ty good test of public opinion, and unless it, too, Is up by the octupus it may yet become the popu lar lfffit between Birmingham and the outer world. As to the “Frisco’s” movements, but little is given out to the public beyond the, fact that its president sails today tor a six weeks seay abroad. With tne Illinois Cen tral reaching Birmingham, the ques tion of Atlantic tidewater connection will oe an interesting one. —r. Gates’ sensational movement in Louisville and Nashville has hastened the great movement in Southern rail way construction trememfuously. Al together the tide of rapid develop ment seems to be turning that way. Summer Law School UNIVRKBITY OF YIKOIMA. in Virginia mountain*. 83d Summer. July 1 toSontrm l**r l. ltt.
