The advance in meats that has at tracted the attention of tne Federal government and provoked its threat to attack a supposed meat trust is being felt sharply in Brunswick. With prices higher than they 'nave been in many years, and still prom ising fey climb, local dcale'rs are beginning to wonder and worry, while the consumers are already kicking vigorously at the amounts they must pay for steaks, chops, etc. Prices are nigher than they have been in ten yeans. Restaurant keep ers are preparing either to raise the price or cut down the size of meat or ders. Housekeepers are laying in supplies of canned goods, while thousands of persons promise to become vegetari ans. This condition of affairs pre vails all over thej country. In New York many butchers are closing out their business. At Attlesboro. Mass., citizens have agreeu to abstain from meat for two weeks on account of the high prices. Ail oviy the United States this condition seems to pre vail, and the question now arises: What Is tne cause? In the north and east they lay it all on the beef trust, which the people declare has put up prices to an un warranted extent, and ib making uie dealers and the people pay. They claim that while the average price to packer* Is from 6*4 to 7% cents, against 5% to (i>4 cents a year, ago, t'ne dealers have to pay about three cents over the last year’s price. One of the local dealers said yes terday, regarding the meat market: "Prices Ju*t now are not excessive considering the supply. Good cattle are very scarce, on the hoof being 3'4 to 7 cents, and hogs being 6U *•> 7>4 cents. "The short corn crop,, combined with .the big popular demand for beef and |t he way the farmer* have marketed | their stock up during the past few j yearb Is the cause for the advance. I ! don’t look for much higher price*.” One of the best known butchers said: “Prices are higher than they have been for ten years. The high piTee has caused many families to cut oft mejit as an article <-* diet. There will be no famine on this very ; account. Ther* 1* no i.-o*dw— * | decrease at present, while, IT the pres ent live stock prices continue, a tui , Uier advance may be expected. The : offerings are very floor, indeed." The high price of meat has car ried other things with it. Poultry, mITU and butter and eggs have all risen Cutter went up six cents a pound recently, while egg* have been fluttering at high figures.
