Emory Speer has designated the Brunswick Daily News as the official organ of the United States Court, in bankruptcy proceedings, for (iiiyiin county. PUBLISHERS NOTICE. The News Publishing Company de sires it to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid for in advance. Wo cannot afford to devote onr space to such advertise ments and wait on. the courts for the money. II will take more than President ffoosevi-it to shut Pension's mouth. Wonder if Attorney General Knox Is really in earnest, about fighting the heel’ trust? ..nyway Mr. Guerry got. a great dea! of free advertising through the Ma con Telegraph. With every other kind of trust among us it is hilt natural that there should he a labor trust. Willi beef at such a high price would not the cassava-raised stock be a great money maker now? Oapt. Clark says be Is too poor to attend the coronation. It looks to us like he lias too much sense. We have the wireless telegraphy, the smokeless powder, the horseless carriage, etc., but, what inventive genius will find us the lull;less wom a ii '! General Gordon was told by his old comrades that the only way to get out of the office or commander in chief would be dying. We hope the gallant Georgian will serve for years to come. Army officers are said to be ap prehensive that in ordering the trial of General Kmitli, General/ Chuff**- will bring other high ranking officers before the court, and that before the investigation of the alleged inhuman conduct of the troops in Samar is con cluded a largo number may be In volved and tried. All the better pro vided a large, number'' be guilty, 'the more complete tho enquiry and he more prompt the punishment where punishment is due, the better for the morals of the army as a whole and for its reputation among tho people. | It may not be absolutely untrue to say that the moat-packers' combine — tho so-called beef "trust"—lk not re sponsible for tile present high prices of beef and other meats. But it is nu undeniable fact that the existing con ditions in the cattle indutsry and trade are such that' high prices would be in evitable were there no "trust" at all, or no agreement or understand ing among the packers. There is an actual shortage of fat cattic—and that condition makes it impossible for even a "trust" to maintain low prices without enormous losses, perhaps ac tual financial ruin. Congressman Grocvcnnr says the tariff needs revision, "not now—lat. r on.’ By that, possibly he means the trusts are not ready for any change, i lln i American * iii/.on, however, vhi some day realise how he is being use l as a means of enrichment for the few. and revolt at the confines. Then will the. tariff he revised for the ben efit of th'o masses. AN EGG TRUST TOO. The latest thing is the egg trust. The meat packers, according to the New York Herald, have cornered the market in eggs. One packing house has secretly placed 100,000 cases into cold storage in Jersey City and is holding them back lest this Supply should weaken the market and break the high prices prevailing. Now, 100,- 000 cases means 43,200,000 eggs in cold storage to be doled out to deal ers to suit the convenience of manip ulators. An increase of 3 cents a doz* en would mean a profit of SIOB,OOO on the single lot held. When meat wefit up pork, veal, and lamb, to which many turned for food, were also forced higher because of the combina tion of packing house dictating prices from western centers. The Her ald is certain that three-fourths of the eggs and poultry product of the United States are today controlled by tho beef trust under the agreement to regulate shipments, hold back the supply, and feed the market at the softest prices which can possibly be. maintained. There Is always a break in egg prices in the early spring, says th" Herald, when the supply is greatly in creased over uio winter receipts, and the cost under natural conditions, drops steadily through April. But since April 1 of this year eggs have advanced until the average quota tions of the New York markets arc now 2 1-2 c and 3c a dozen higher than in the corresponding period of last year. NO MONUMENT FOR GUTLER. The bill appropriating $25,000 for the erection of an equestrian statue in memory of General Benjamin F. Butler was defeated last, week in the lower house of tlq- Massachusetts legislature by a vote of 114 to 83, which was a much larger vote t’nan was recorded against a similar meas ure six years ago. When the truth is told it must lie said that there is nothing In tho mil itary career of General Butler that appeals even to the people of Mas sachusetts. Asa major-general com manding a division of the Federal army during the Civil war General Butler never won a single victory or engaged in any serious engagement. He distinguished himself only on one occasion, and that was getting "bot tled up,” as Grant described it, by the Confederate forces on the James river in Virginia. He took military command anil established martial law in New Urlenns after the city had been captured by Admiral Farragut, and his famous rule there is a mat ter of history of the unsavory kiud. The New Orleans States, noting the failure of the Butler statue hill to pass the Massachusetts legislature, says with evident feeling: "Suffice It to say that Massachusetts having de clined to build a monument to his memory it is not reasonable to sup pose that one will be erected else where unless it be In hell."
